Originally from Vigo, Spain, Alonso pursued formal training in the performing arts. He attended the Royal School of Dramatic Arts (RESAD) in Madrid, completing his studies in 1992, and also trained at the Teatro de la Danza. In addition to his acting career, he creates artwork and literary material, publishing under the pen name Pedro Alonso O'choro.
Alonso initially established his television career in the region of Galicia, appearing in several local series. These early television roles included appearances on Rías Baixas from 2003 to 2005, Maridos e mulleres from 2006 to 2008, Padre Casares between 2008 and 2015, and Gondar in 2009.
His national television profile expanded significantly with his portrayal of Diego Murquía, who also used the alias Adrián Vera Celande, in the historical series Gran Hotel. In 2017, he debuted as Berlin in Money Heist on Antena 3 before the show reached a broader global audience on Netflix. He later returned to this signature role in the 2023 spin-off series Berlin.
Beyond these television roles, Alonso co-starred in Amazon Prime Video's inaugural Latin American drama series, Diablo Guardián, which launched in May 2018. The following year, he took on the lead role in the suspense feature film The Silence of the Marsh. Between 2025 and 2026, he participated in a three-part commercial campaign for Alfa Romeo Junior titled "Learn to Love Again," which encompassed the installments "Salesman," "Cuore Matto," and "Interrogation."
Over the course of his career, Alonso was named "International Star of the Year" by GQ Turkey magazine in 2018. In his personal life, he is ambidextrous and fluent in Spanish, Galician, Catalan, and English. He has one daughter from a prior relationship and is in a relationship with Tatiana Djordjevic, a Parisian artist and hypnotherapist.
