Paul Mescal

Paul Colm Michael Mescal is an Irish actor recognized for his work across stage and screen. His accolades include two BAFTA Awards and a Laurence Olivier Award, as well as nominations for an Academy Award, a Primetime Emmy Award, and a Golden Globe Award. After launching his career in Dublin theater productions, he gained international fame for his breakthrough television role in 2020. He subsequently transitioned to feature films, earning critical praise for independent dramas, major studio projects, and stage performances.

Born on February 2, 1996, in Dublin, Mescal was raised in Maynooth, County Kildare. His mother worked as a Garda and his father was a teacher who acted semi-professionally. Mescal grew up alongside two younger siblings. During his youth, he played Gaelic football as a defender for Maynooth GAA and Kildare, earning praise for his athleticism and maturity before a jaw injury ended his participation in the sport. Mescal made his stage debut at age 16 in a school production of The Phantom of the Opera, which led him to study acting at The Lir Academy at Trinity College Dublin, where he graduated with a Bachelor of Arts in 2017.

Upon graduating, Mescal performed in several Dublin and London theater productions, starring as Jay Gatsby in The Great Gatsby at the Gate Theatre, as well as appearing in The Red Shoes, Asking for It, The Plough and the Stars, A Midsummer Night's Dream, A Portrait of the Artist as a Young Man, and The Lieutenant of Inishmore. His screen breakthrough occurred in 2020 when he played Connell Waldron in the BBC and Hulu drama miniseries Normal People. His performance earned him the British Academy Television Award for Best Actor and a nomination for a Primetime Emmy Award. That year, he also appeared in the miniseries The Deceived, the short film Drifting, and a music video for The Rolling Stones.

Mescal debuted in feature films with a supporting role in The Lost Daughter in 2021. The following year, he starred in God's Creatures and portrayed a troubled father in the drama Aftersun, receiving nominations for the Academy Award for Best Actor and the BAFTA Award for Best Actor in a Leading Role. On stage, he portrayed Stanley Kowalski in a West End revival of A Streetcar Named Desire, winning the Laurence Olivier Award for Best Actor.

In 2023, Mescal starred in the drama All of Us Strangers, earning a BAFTA nomination for Best Supporting Actor, and appeared in the science fiction film Foe. The Academy Museum of Motion Pictures presented him with the Vantage Award in 2024. That same year, he starred in Ridley Scott's historical action film Gladiator II, which earned $460 million globally. His scheduled film roles include playing William Shakespeare in Hamnet, appearing in The History of Sound, starring in Merrily We Roll Along, and portraying Paul McCartney in a multi-part Beatles biopic project.

Mescal speaks English and Irish, moved to London in 2020, and owns property in Ireland. Outside of acting, he plays the piano, has performed for charity events, and has contributed to musical projects alongside partners Phoebe Bridgers and Gracie Abrams.
