Debuting online in 2008, the persona was created as a satire targeting arrogant, untalented singers who post internet videos believing their performances will launch mainstream show business careers. Inspired by early online videos and rude classmates, Ballinger depicts the character as a delusional, self-absorbed, home-schooled woman living with her family while maintaining a relentless ambition to achieve celebrity status.

The character's primary platform is a self-titled YouTube channel, which began experiencing rapid growth in early 2013 after reaching an initial milestone of 150,000 subscribers. Content on the channel features Miranda performing intentionally off-key renditions of popular music and stage tunes, giving flawed instruction tutorials, misunderstanding current events, and addressing audience criticism. By July 2021, the channel had accumulated over 10 million subscribers and more than two billion total views. The persona has also established a widespread presence across additional digital networks, generating over 12 million followers on TikTok and 6 million on Instagram.

Visually, the character is distinguished by exaggerated facial expressions, cocked head movements, active eyebrows, and bright red lipstick drawn beyond the borders of her lips. Miranda typically wears out-of-style, mismatched clothing and performs stiff dance routines. When encountering negative feedback from viewers who mistake her persona for a genuine performance, she responds with her signature phrase, "Haters Back Off!" Over time, the channel incorporated evolving narrative arcs, including a storyline in 2018 where the character claimed a virgin pregnancy, later featuring child care topics and comedic rants following Ballinger's real-life childbirth.
