Melody Thornton

Melody Thornton is an American singer and television personality who gained prominence as one of the main vocalists of the pop girl group the Pussycat Dolls. Born on September 28, 1984, she achieved global commercial success with the group during the 2000s, receiving a Grammy Award nomination as part of the ensemble. Following her departure from the group in 2010, Thornton pursued a solo career encompassing independent music releases, television appearances, and musical theater roles.

Thornton was raised in Phoenix, Arizona, and is of Mexican and African-American descent. She attended Camelback High School, where she gave her first public performance singing "This Little Light of Mine" at six years old. She continued to perform at local talent shows throughout Arizona and later studied music engineering for one semester after high school. Thornton has cited artists such as B. B. King, Aretha Franklin, The Jacksons, Mariah Carey, and Christina Aguilera as vocal inspirations and influences on her career.

At age 19, Thornton auditioned for the Pussycat Dolls in Burbank, California, and was selected to join the group to enhance its vocal strength. As the youngest member and the only one without a dance background, she served as a secondary vocalist alongside Carmit Bachar, with Nicole Scherzinger as lead singer. The group released its debut single, "Don't Cha," in 2005, followed by the debut studio album PCD, which sold seven million copies worldwide and included hit singles such as "Stickwitu" and "Buttons." In 2007, Thornton was featured on the Jibbs single "Go Too Far."

The Pussycat Dolls released their second album, Doll Domination, in September 2008, featuring singles such as "When I Grow Up" and "I Hate This Part." The group embarked on the Doll Domination Tour in 2009, which grossed over $14 million. However, rising internal tensions led to a hiatus later that year, and Thornton officially confirmed her departure from the group in June 2010. She later opted out of joining the group's 2019 reunion to focus on her solo endeavors.

As an independent music artist, Thornton released her debut solo single, "Sweet Vendetta," in 2011, followed by her debut mixtape, P.O.Y.B.L, in 2012. She collaborated with artists such as Bizzy Crook, LL Cool J, and Prince Kay One in 2013, and later worked with UK producer Harrison on the dance track "Freak Like Me." In 2020, she released the single "Love Will Return" and her seven-track debut EP, Lioness Eyes.

In addition to her music, Thornton has appeared extensively on television and stage. Her television credits include serving as a panelist on Bank of Hollywood and competing on programs such as Popstar to Operastar, Celebs Go Dating, Celebrity Island with Bear Grylls, and Dancing on Ice. She won the fourth season of the Australian version of The Masked Singer in 2022 as "Mirrorball" and competed on The Masked Singer UK in 2024. Her theater work includes playing Rachel Marron in musical productions of The Bodyguard in China, the UK, and Ireland, as well as roles in Rip It Up – The 70s and Cinderella.
