Melissa Leo

Melissa Chessington Leo is an American actress known for her work across television and film. Over her career, she has received numerous honors, including an Academy Award, a Primetime Emmy Award, a Golden Globe Award, an Actor Award, and two Critics' Choice Awards.

Leo was born on September 14, 1960, in Manhattan and grew up on the Lower East Side. She is the daughter of Margaret, a California-born teacher, and Arnold Leo III, an editor at Grove Press, fisherman, and former spokesman for the East Hampton Baymen's Association. She has an older brother, Erik Leo, and her paternal aunt is art historian Christine Leo Roussel. Following her parents' divorce, her mother moved the children to Red Clover Commune in Putney, Vermont. Leo began performing as a child with the Bread and Puppet Theater Company, attended Bellows Falls High School, and studied acting at Mountview Academy of Theatre Arts in London and SUNY Purchase before choosing to leave school and move to New York City to begin auditioning.

Leo made her acting debut in 1984 on the television show All My Children, earning a Daytime Emmy Award nomination for Outstanding Ingenue/Woman in a Drama Series. She subsequently appeared in television shows and films such as The Young Riders, Streetwalkin', A Time of Destiny, and Last Summer in the Hamptons. Her breakthrough role arrived in 1993 as Detective Sergeant Kay Howard on the television series Homicide: Life on the Street, a role she played until 1997 and reprised in the 2000 television film Homicide: The Movie.

After a brief hiatus from acting, Leo earned critical acclaim for her supporting role in Alejandro González Iñárritu's 2003 film 21 Grams. Throughout the 2000s, she appeared in films such as Hide and Seek, American Gun, The Three Burials of Melquiades Estrada, Lullaby, Righteous Kill, According to Greta, and Stephanie's Image. In 2008, Leo achieved major praise for her performance as Ray Eddy in Frozen River, winning an Independent Spirit Award and receiving an Academy Award nomination for Best Actress.

In 2010, Leo starred as Alice Eklund-Ward in David O. Russell's film The Fighter, a performance that earned her the Academy Award for Best Supporting Actress, a Golden Globe Award, and a Screen Actors Guild Award. During her Oscar campaign, she created some controversy by purchasing self-promotional advertisement space. While accepting her Oscar, she generated attention for using profanity, for which she later apologized.

Following her Oscar win, Leo appeared in the HBO miniseries Mildred Pierce, receiving an Emmy Award nomination. In 2013, she won a Primetime Emmy Award for her guest appearance on the television series Louie. Her subsequent screen credits include the films Red State, Why Stop Now, Olympus Has Fallen, Oblivion, Prisoners, London Has Fallen, The Equalizer, The Equalizer 2, and the 2017 Netflix film The Most Hated Woman in America, as well as the Fox television event series Wayward Pines.

In her personal life, Leo had a son in 1987 with actor John Heard, whom she dated from 1986 to 1988 while living in Manhattan. For three decades, her primary residence was a 200-year-old farmhouse in Stone Ridge, New York. She returned to Manhattan in 2019, moved out during the COVID-19 pandemic, and returned in 2023.
