Lloyd Owen

Marcus Richard Lloyd Owen is an English actor who was born on April 14, 1966, in Westminster, London. Although raised in London, he considers himself Welsh, as both his father, actor Glyn Owen, and his mother, actress Patricia Mort, were from Wales. He grew up exposed to the theatrical environment surrounding the Royal Court Theatre. While attending Highgate School, Owen initially had little interest in reading or acting in plays, but after participating in a school production, he received positive feedback that encouraged him to pursue acting as a career.

At sixteen, Owen joined the National Youth Theatre and later gained admission to the Royal Academy of Dramatic Art in London. During his studies at the academy, he secured professional acting work and an Equity card. After requesting a term off that was denied, he was dismissed from the institution after one year. He subsequently joined the Cheek by Jowl theater company, touring internationally in various Shakespearean plays, and later joined the Royal Shakespeare Company.

Owen achieved a career breakthrough on television when he was cast as Professor Dr. Henry Jones Sr., the father of Indiana Jones, in the American series The Young Indiana Jones Chronicles, appearing in eight episodes between 1992 and 1993. He went on to secure major roles in television, including lead character Paul Bowman-MacDonald across twenty-eight episodes of the BBC Scotland series Monarch of the Glen from 2002 to 2005. His later television credits include Professor Jon Ford in The Innocence Project, Ansel in the supernatural series The Originals, President Farrell in You, Me and the Apocalypse, and Dominic Swanson in the drama Cleaning Up. In 2020, he was cast as Elendil in the Amazon Prime fantasy series The Lord of the Rings: The Rings of Power.

In film, Owen played Peter in The Republic of Love in 2003 and portrayed solicitor William Heelis in the 2006 biographical film Miss Potter. He starred as Commander Nathan Walker in the 2011 science fiction movie Apollo 18 and played officer John Clive in the 2018 Hindi feature film Thugs of Hindostan.

Throughout his career, stage acting has remained a primary passion for Owen. His early stage work included Cheek by Jowl productions of Philoctetes, Macbeth, The Tempest, and Twelfth Night. A significant theatrical milestone occurred in 1996 when he played Nick in Edward Albee's Who's Afraid of Virginia Woolf? at the Almeida Theatre in London. He subsequently performed as Dan in Patrick Marber's Closer in 1998 and as George in Peter Gill's play The York Realist in 2002, earning strong praise from theater critics for his stage work.

In his personal life, Owen is married to actress and artist Juliette Mole, and the couple has two children, Maxim and Mimi. He is also fluent in French.
