About Kevin Parker
Kevin Richard Parker is an Australian singer-songwriter, musician, record producer, and DJ. He is best known as the creator of the psychedelic rock musical project Tame Impala, for which he writes, produces, records, and performs the music. In addition to his primary project, Parker has served as a member and producer for several other musical groups within the Perth music scene, including Pond and Mink Mussel Creek.
Parker was born on 20 January 1986 in Sydney, Australia, to a father from Zimbabwe and a mother from South Africa. His family relocated to Western Australia, living in Kalgoorlie before settling in Perth, where his parents separated when he was three years old. Raised with a passion for music, Parker learned guitar by playing alongside his father and took up the drums at age 11. By age 12, he was creating lo-fi recordings by overdubbing various instruments, acquiring his first eight-track recorder at age 16.
While attending John XXIII College in Perth, Parker met Dominic Simper at age 13, and the two began playing music together. Although he initially enrolled in university to study engineering and later astronomy, Parker maintained a primary focus on music. Shortly before his final astronomy examination, he was contacted by Modular Recordings to sign his group to their label, prompting him to leave his studies to pursue music full-time. During the recording of his first album, his father passed away from cancer.
In 2005, Parker formed The Dee Dee Dums, a group that gained local acclaim before being renamed Tame Impala in late 2007. Following a self-titled debut EP in 2008, Tame Impala released its debut studio album, Innerspeaker, in 2010. Parker followed this with Lonerism in 2012 and Currents in 2015. Tame Impala's fourth studio album, The Slow Rush, was released in 2020, followed by the project's fifth album, Deadbeat, in 2025. Major live appearances by the group include performances on Saturday Night Live, headlining the Coachella Valley Music and Arts Festival, and performing at the Glastonbury Festival in 2019.
Beyond Tame Impala, Parker joined the band Pond as a live drummer from 2009 until 2011 and co-produced several of their studio albums, including Beard, Wives, Denim, Hobo Rocket, Man It Feels Like Space Again, The Weather, and Tasmania. He was also a member of Mink Mussel Creek, playing guitar and later drums, and produced their album Mink Mussel Manticore. In 2012, Parker collaborated with Melody Prochet on her self-titled project Melody's Echo Chamber, performing instrumentation and producing the album. He also participated in the short-lived band Space Lime Peacock.
Over his career, Parker has received widespread recognition for his work. His awards include 13 ARIA Music Awards, two APRA Awards, a Brit Award, and two Grammy Awards from five nominations.
