Greta Gerwig

Greta Celeste Gerwig is an American film director, screenwriter, actress, and producer. She initially gained recognition as a key figure in the mumblecore film movement through her work on independent films. She subsequently expanded from acting and co-writing independent movies to directing major studio films, earning widespread critical and commercial acclaim. In 2018, Gerwig was included in the annual Time 100 list of the most influential people in the world.

Gerwig was born and raised in Sacramento, California, as the daughter of an OB-GYN nurse and a credit union employee. She grew up in the River Park neighborhood alongside an older brother and sister. She attended St. Francis High School, graduating in 2002. Although she originally engaged in dance and competitive fencing and intended to study musical theatre, she ultimately graduated from Barnard College with a degree in English and philosophy.

After not being admitted into playwriting graduate programs, Gerwig turned to acting and filmmaking. She began her career collaborating with filmmaker Joe Swanberg on projects such as Hannah Takes the Stairs in 2007 and Nights and Weekends in 2008, sharing writing and directing duties on the latter. During this period, she appeared in independent films including Baghead, Yeast, and The House of the Devil, establishing herself as an important figure in the rising mumblecore movement.

In 2010, Gerwig starred in Noah Baumbach's Greenberg. She went on to co-write and star in Baumbach's Frances Ha in 2012, receiving a Golden Globe Award nomination, and Mistress America in 2015. During the early to mid-2010s, she acted in Whit Stillman's Damsels in Distress, Woody Allen's To Rome with Love, Rebecca Miller's Maggie's Plan, Pablo Larraín's Jackie, and Mike Mills's 20th Century Women. Additionally, she made her stage debut in The Village Bike in 2014, earning an Outer Critics Circle Award nomination.

Gerwig made her solo feature directorial debut with the 2017 coming-of-age film Lady Bird, which she also wrote. The film earned Academy Award nominations for Best Picture, Best Original Screenplay, and Best Director, making her the fifth woman nominated for Best Director in Oscar history. In 2019, she wrote and directed an adaptation of Little Women, which received six Academy Award nominations, including Best Picture and Best Adapted Screenplay. Both films explored themes of girlhood, artistic ambition, and mother-daughter relationships.

In 2023, Gerwig directed and co-wrote the fantasy comedy Barbie with Baumbach. The movie became a massive commercial success, making her the first solo female director to have a film gross over one billion dollars worldwide. The project earned eight Academy Award nominations, including a nomination for Gerwig and Baumbach for Best Adapted Screenplay.

In addition to her feature directing, Gerwig co-starred in Baumbach's 2022 film White Noise, performed voice work in Wes Anderson's Isle of Dogs, and contributed uncredited script work for Snow White. She was later hired by Netflix to write and direct film adaptations of C. S. Lewis's The Chronicles of Narnia series, including Narnia: The Magician's Nephew. In 2024, Gerwig served as the Jury President for the feature film jury at the Cannes Film Festival, becoming the first American female director to hold the position.
