Virginie Efira

Virginie Efira is a Belgian and French actress who has established herself as a prominent figure in European cinema. Born on May 5, 1977, she initially gained public recognition as a television presenter before transitioning into feature films. Over her career, she has earned critical acclaim for her versatility, moving from television hosting and romantic comedies to complex dramatic roles, securing major accolades including César Awards and honors at the Cannes Film Festival.

Efira was born in the Brugmann district of Brussels, Belgium, and raised in Schaerbeek. She is the daughter of Carine Verelst and André Efira, a professor specializing in hemato-oncology. She has Greek-Jewish ancestry and three siblings. Her parents divorced when she was 18 years old. During her education in Brussels, she studied Latin, mathematics, psychology, and social sciences. At 28 years old, she relocated to Paris.

Her media career began in the late 1990s on Belgian television, starting with the youth show Megamix on Club RTL. She subsequently fronted several broadcasts in Belgium, including local editions of popular talent programs. Transitioning to French television, she joined M6 as a weather presenter before hosting major entertainment, music, and reality broadcasts, including Nouvelle Star. She also presented programs for the Belgian channel RTL-TVi.

In the mid-2000s, Efira expanded into acting, providing voice work for the French releases of animated films such as Garfield: The Movie, Robots, Puss in Boots, and the Hotel Transylvania series, as well as appearing in the series Kaamelott. After participating in Rendez-vous en terre inconnue and playing a supporting role in the 2011 comedy-drama My Worst Nightmare, she achieved her film breakthrough in the 2013 romantic comedy It Boy, which earned significant commercial success.

Efira expanded into dramatic cinema with Justine Triet's 2016 film In Bed with Victoria, earning a Magritte Award and her first César Award nomination. That same year, she appeared in the psychological thriller Elle. She further established her dramatic career through leading parts in Catherine Corsini's An Impossible Love, the ensemble comedy Sink or Swim, Triet's Sibyl, Albert Dupontel's award-winning Bye Bye Morons, and Paul Verhoeven's historical drama Benedetta.

Her work in the 2020s yielded widespread acclaim. In 2023, she won the César Award for Best Actress for her performance in Paris Memories. Following praised roles in Other People's Children, Just the Two of Us, and All to Play For, she appeared in two competition films at the 2026 Cannes Film Festival, Parallel Tales and All of a Sudden. Her performance in All of a Sudden earned her the Cannes Film Festival Award for Best Actress.

Efira married actor Patrick Ridremont in 2002, separating in 2005 and divorcing in 2009. She was later in a relationship with director Mabrouk El Mechri from 2012 to 2017, with whom she had a daughter in 2013. She obtained French citizenship in 2016, becoming a dual citizen. Since 2017, she has been in a relationship with actor Niels Schneider, with whom she has a son born in 2023, and the couple resides in the 11th arrondissement of Paris.
