About Trey Songz

Tremaine Aldon Neverson, known professionally as Trey Songz, is an American R&B singer and songwriter born on November 28, 1984, in Petersburg, Virginia. He is the son of Claude Neverson Jr. and April (Gholson) Tucker, who was 17 when he was born. Raised as a military brat by his mother and stepfather, Neverson initially had no aspirations for a music career due to his shyness, though he recognized his vocal abilities at age 14. After graduating from Petersburg High School in 2002, he moved to New Jersey in 2003 to begin recording. That same year, record producer Troy Taylor discovered him and signed him to Songbook Entertainment in a joint venture with Atlantic Records.

While recording his debut album in 2004, Neverson released mixtapes under the alias Prince of Virginia, gaining regional attention with tracks such as "Open the Closet." His debut single, "Gotta Make It" featuring Twista, was released in March 2005 and reached the Billboard Hot 100. His debut studio album, I Gotta Make It, was released in July 2005, entering the Billboard 200 at number 20 and selling 40,000 copies in its first week. The album's second single, "Gotta Go," reached number 67 on the Hot 100, and Neverson was subsequently featured on Twista's hit single "Girl Tonite."

Songz released his second studio album, Trey Day, in October 2007, which peaked at number 11 on the Billboard 200. Its single "Can't Help but Wait" was included on the soundtrack for the film Step Up 2 the Streets, reached number 14 on the Hot 100, and earned a Grammy Award nomination for Best Male R&B Vocal Performance. In August 2009, Songz released his third album, Ready, which peaked at number three on the Billboard 200 and was later certified Platinum by the RIAA. The album featured the top-ten single "Say Aah" featuring Fabolous, as well as "I Invented Sex" featuring Drake, which topped the Hot R&B/Hip-Hop Songs chart. Ready was nominated for Best Contemporary R&B Album at the 52nd Annual Grammy Awards.

His fourth album, Passion, Pain & Pleasure, arrived in September 2010, peaking at number two on the Billboard 200. It spawned the single "Bottoms Up" featuring Nicki Minaj, which reached number six on the Hot 100 and was certified 3x Platinum. In 2012, Songz released his fifth album, Chapter V, which became his first album to debut atop the Billboard 200 and was supported by the Grammy-nominated single "Heart Attack." Around this time, he also expanded into acting, starring as the male lead role Ryan in the film Texas Chainsaw 3D.

Songz achieved his second consecutive number-one debut on the Billboard 200 with his sixth studio album, Trigga, released in 2014, which was later re-issued following the success of his 2015 single "Slow Motion." He has since released the studio albums Tremaine in 2017 and Back Home in 2020. Throughout his career, Trey Songz has sold over 32 million records worldwide.
