About Todrick Hall
Todrick Hall is an American performer, singer, dancer, rapper, choreographer, activist, and YouTuber born on April 4, 1985. He first achieved national visibility as a contestant on the ninth season of the reality singing competition American Idol. Following his appearance on the show, he established a substantial online following by publishing original songs, comedic skits, and choreographed music videos on YouTube.
Hall spent his early childhood in Plainview, Texas, where he was raised by a single mother. His family later relocated to Dallas after his mother remarried. An elementary school teacher encouraged his initial participation in the arts, leading him to explore ballet, theater, and orchestral music. Hall identified as gay and came out to his family at age fifteen. He began combining singing and dancing professionally at sixteen while performing at the Six Flags Over Texas amusement park, later working on cruise ships and at Disney parks.
At age twenty, Hall debuted on Broadway in the ensemble of The Color Purple, which inspired him to audition for American Idol in 2009. He reached the semi-finals in the ninth season before being eliminated in the top sixteen in March 2010. Hall transitioned to full-time YouTube content creation in 2011. A choreographed Target flash mob set to a Beyoncé track led to him being hired to choreograph her 2013 music video "Blow." In 2015, MTV broadcast Todrick, an eight-episode documentary series detailing his video production process.
Beginning in 2016, Hall became a resident choreographer and frequent judge on RuPaul's Drag Race, starting with season eight and All Stars 2. That same year, he self-released the visual concept album Straight Outta Oz, which drew artistic inspiration from his childhood love of The Wizard of Oz. He subsequently starred as Lola in Kinky Boots on Broadway from late 2016 to early 2017. His theatrical career expanded with engagements as Billy Flynn in Chicago on Broadway and in the West End, as well as playing Ogie in Waitress on Broadway in 2019.
Hall released another visual album, Forbidden, in 2018, followed by a world tour. Between 2019 and 2021, he put out a three-part EP trilogy titled Haus Party. He co-executive produced and appeared in Taylor Swift's 2019 music video for "You Need to Calm Down." During the COVID-19 pandemic in 2020, he wrote and recorded the EP Quarantine Queen and served as the international host for Global Pride 2020. He later released the studio albums Femuline in 2021 and Algorhythm in 2022.
Hall competed on the sixth season of The Masked Singer in late 2021, placing second as "Bull," and finished as the runner-up on season three of Celebrity Big Brother in early 2022. In 2024, he joined the stage production Burlesque as the character Sean and contributed original songs, later taking on roles as director and choreographer for its 2025 West End transfer. He also created the original musical Midnight, writing its music and lyrics while directing, choreographing, and starring in the lead role of Rail for its London premiere.
