Tamar Braxton

Tamar Estine Braxton (born March 17, 1977) is an American singer, songwriter, actress, and television personality. She began her musical career in 1990 as a founding member of The Braxtons, an R&B singing group formed with her sisters. She released her self-titled debut solo album in 2000 and achieved further commercial success with her second album, Love and War, in 2013. Over her career, Braxton has released five albums, won a BET Award and three Soul Train Music Awards, and received four Grammy Award nominations.

Braxton was born in Severn, Maryland, to Michael and Evelyn Braxton. As the youngest of six children, she began singing as a toddler. She later joined her church choir, where her father served as a pastor.

In 1989, Braxton and her four sisters signed their first record deal with Arista Records, releasing their debut single, Good Life, in 1990. After her sister Toni was signed as a solo artist by LaFace Records, the remaining sisters served as backup singers. The Braxtons were later signed to LaFace and Atlantic Records, releasing their debut album, So Many Ways, as a trio in 1996. After performing as an opening act for Toni Braxton's European tour in 1997, the group disbanded when Tamar departed for a solo career in 1998.

In 1999, Braxton began recording solo material with DreamWorks Records. Her debut album, Tamar, was released in 2000 and reached number 127 on the Billboard 200. After being dropped by her label, she co-wrote songs, provided background vocals, and made video appearances for her sister Toni. She subsequently signed with Casablanca Records in 2004 and Universal Records in 2010, releasing single tracks while contributing to soundtracks and compilations.

Braxton expanded into television in 2011, starring in the We TV reality series Braxton Family Values alongside her mother and sisters, followed by the spin-off series Tamar & Vince in 2012. In 2013, she signed with Epic Records and released Love and War, which peaked at number two on the Billboard 200 and topped the Top R&B/Hip-Hop Albums chart. That same year, she became a co-host on the daytime talk show The Real, earning two Daytime Emmy Award nominations before leaving the show in 2016. She also released the holiday album Winter Loversland in late 2013.

Braxton released her fourth album, Calling All Lovers, in 2015, which reached number two on the US Top R&B/Hip-Hop Albums chart, and competed on season 21 of Dancing with the Stars. In 2017, she released her fifth album, Bluebird of Happiness, which topped the Billboard independent chart. In 2019, she won the second season of Celebrity Big Brother, becoming the first African-American person to win an American season of Big Brother. Her subsequent projects include acting in the film True To The Game 2, hosting the VH1 series To Catch A Beautician, launching her podcast Under Construction w/ Tamar Braxton, and starring in the docu-series Tamar Braxton: Get Ya Life!
