Steve Wallis

Steve Wallis is a Canadian online content creator and independent filmmaker recognized for his video work centered on outdoor recreation, stealth camping, and accessible wilderness practices. He is widely known for producing digital media that highlights alternative camping methods and survival techniques without relying on costly gear.

Wallis was born in Vancouver, British Columbia. As a young man, he spent time living out of a recreational vehicle in Victoria, British Columbia. During this period of boondocking out of necessity, his vehicle lacked basic utility connections, including electricity, running water, and sewage systems.

In his professional life outside of digital content creation, Wallis has worked as the proprietor of a heating company. His introduction to YouTube began with the initial assumption that the platform served strictly as a host for viral comedy videos. After publishing a clip documenting himself camping in extreme weather conditions reaching −32 °C, he received a strong positive response from commenters, prompting him to shift his focus toward creating regular outdoor content.

Wallis established his YouTube channel on April 19, 2010. His video output covers a range of activities, including yard camping, van-dwelling, urban stealth camping, gold panning, and environmental survival techniques. Many of his endeavors focus on making outdoor recreation accessible to the general public, demonstrating how to camp in nontraditional locations such as parking lots, avoid expensive equipment, and start campfires using everyday items like hand sanitizer.

In addition to short-form online videos, Wallis wrote and directed the documentary film Boondocking, which was released in 2017. By 2023, he was working full-time on his channel, Camping with Steve. His enterprise is funded through platform AdSense earnings, branded merchandise sales, and viewer donations, while actively avoiding corporate brand sponsorships.

As of July 2020, Wallis maintained a weekly upload schedule on Thursdays, sharing videos between 15 and 25 minutes in length. These uploads typically track the full timeline of a trip, including setting up camp, making a fire, cooking, sleeping, breaking down the site, and departing. He also routinely features a personal ritual of drinking a beer after finishing his campsite setup, referring to the routine as "step two."

Wallis currently resides in Alberta. In August 2022, his wife of five years, Jessica Audrey Hatton, passed away in her sleep at 31 years of age. Wallis, who frequently referred to her as "Beautiful Wife" in his content, released a video addressing her passing, after which viewers shared condolences and supportive messages.
