Sara Zwangobani

Sara Zwangobani is an Australian actress known for her work in theatre, television, and film. She achieved major international recognition in 2022 for her performance as Marigold Brandyfoot in the Amazon Prime Video fantasy drama series The Lord of the Rings: The Rings of Power. Prior to this, she built an extensive acting career in Australia across numerous stage productions and television series.

Zwangobani was born in Canberra, Australian Capital Territory, and raised in the suburb of Cook. She has a Zimbabwean father and a Zulu surname, and her brother, Elliott Zwangobani, is a former futsal player who served as a director for the Australian Sports Commission. She received her early education at Cook Primary School before taking part in a drama program at Hawker College in Canberra. Between 1985 and 1988, she trained in various dance styles, including ballet, tap, jazz, funk, and modern dance, at the Betsy Sawers School of Dance and with the Human Veins Dance Theatre. In 1989, she completed a television and film workshop course at Broadway Film Studios in Canberra, later graduating in 1992 from the Victorian College of the Arts with a Diploma of Arts in Dramatic Arts (Acting).

Upon graduating, actor John Howard approached Zwangobani to perform in productions for the Sydney Theatre Company. Her early stage credits include Summer of the Aliens, Women in Shorts in 1997, Pulse 10 in 1999, The Crucible in 2000, and Imago in 2001. She also appeared in Girl in Tan Boots for the Griffin Theatre Company, Lyrebird at the Old Fitzroy Theatre, and Dirty Butterfly, as well as playing Mark Antony in a production of Julius Caesar.

Her stage work continued with prominent theatrical projects. In 2009, she played Rosetta in a Sydney Theatre Company production of A Streetcar Named Desire, which was directed by Liv Ullmann and featured Cate Blanchett. In 2010, she played Elizabeth, a wet nurse, in the Sydney Theatre Company's production of Sarah Ruhl's play In the Next Room (or The Vibrator Play), directed by Pamela Rabe.

Zwangobani made her screen debut in 1997 on an episode of the television series Fallen Angels. In 2006, she joined the cast of the Australian drama series Love My Way as Imogen for six episodes. That year, the show was named Best Television Drama Series at the Australian Film Institute Awards and won Most Outstanding Drama Program at the ASTRA Awards. Also in 2006, she played Detective Maria Ramos in seven episodes of Lifetime's prime-time series Monarch Cove.

Over the following years, Zwangobani appeared in numerous Australian screen projects. Her credits include All Saints in 2005 and 2009, Nightmares & Dreamscapes: From the Stories of Stephen King in 2006, the film Disgrace in 2008, Packed to the Rafters in 2009, Soul Mates in 2014, and 2019 appearances in Home and Away and Doctor Doctor.

In 2022, Zwangobani secured her highest-profile screen role playing Marigold Brandyfoot, the stepmother of Elanor "Nori" Brandyfoot (played by Markella Kavenagh), in Amazon Prime Video's The Lord of the Rings: The Rings of Power. The first season of the production was filmed in New Zealand.
