Salvador del Solar

Salvador Alejandro Jorge del Solar Labarthe, born May 1, 1970, is a Peruvian actor, film director, and politician. He served as the Minister of Culture from 2016 to 2017 and later became the Prime Minister of Peru in 2019 under President Martín Vizcarra. He is recognized as the youngest prime minister in Peruvian history and the first politician in the nation with an extensive career in the performing arts.

Del Solar was born in Lima to Salvador del Solar Figuerola and Elvira Labarthe Flores, and he is a descendant of former Peruvian political figure Pedro Alejandrino del Solar. He attended the Santa María Marianistas School before studying law at the Pontifical Catholic University of Peru. During his legal studies, he established the law magazine Lus et Veritas and competed as a member of the national water polo team. After graduating with honors and practicing law for a year, he pursued a master's degree in international relations at Syracuse University's Maxwell School.

Choosing to transition into acting, Del Solar enrolled in Alberto Ísola's professional workshop and performed in numerous classical stage productions and television projects. He gained widespread recognition for his starring role as Captain Pantaleón Pantoja in the 1999 film adaptation of Captain Pantoja and the Special Services alongside Angie Cepeda. He later appeared in popular screen productions such as Pobre Diabla, The Dwarf, El Capo 2, and The Vanished Elephant. Del Solar made his debut as a film director with Magallanes in 2014 and later released his second feature film, Ramón and Ramón, at the San Sebastian International Film Festival in 2024.

In December 2016, President Pedro Pablo Kuczynski appointed Del Solar as Minister of Culture. During his tenure, Del Solar advocated for a new Cinema Law designed to increase public subsidies for national film projects, supported the relaunch of the Museum of the Nation, and backed the development of the National Museum of Lurín. He resigned from his ministerial post in December 2017 in protest of Kuczynski's presidential pardon granted to former President Alberto Fujimori.

President Martín Vizcarra selected Del Solar to serve as Prime Minister of Peru on March 11, 2019. Navigating intense political friction with the opposition-dominated legislature, Del Solar presented the administration's core objectives—including anti-corruption measures and institutional strengthening—and successfully secured initial legislative votes of confidence for government policies and constitutional reforms.

On September 30, 2019, Del Solar requested a vote of confidence to alter the selection procedures for Constitutional Court magistrates. When lawmakers bypassed his request and proceeded with the appointments, President Vizcarra interpreted the action as a factual denial of confidence. Del Solar resigned his post that day and signed the decree dissolving Congress. Although widely viewed by observers as a potential presidential candidate for future election cycles, Del Solar publicly announced on July 31, 2020, that he would not enter the presidential race.
