Kara began her career in Chicago before subsequently moving to Miami, New York City, and ultimately Los Angeles. Early in her broadcasting career, she served as a Spring Break VJ in Lake Havasu and Panama City Beach. By 2006, she had filmed segments for the TV Guide Channel's coverage of the Golden Globes, worked on the Catherine Zeta-Jones benefit for the Motion Picture and Television Fund, and hosted the Kentucky Derby episode of the E! Network series Wild On!.
Between 2000 and 2009, Kara worked as an actress across various media. She made 14 credited and minor uncredited appearances in feature films, short films, television series, music videos, and video games. Her acting work began in 2000 with a skit on an episode of MADtv. She later secured a recurring role as Alistair's Assistant on the daytime soap opera Passions, appearing in seven episodes from 2002 to 2003. Her other television credits include playing a shopper on a 2005 episode of Las Vegas and an appearance on a 2009 episode of Days of Our Lives.
Throughout her career, Kara established a strong presence in modeling and commercial work. Prior to 2011, she appeared in television commercials for major brands including Coors Light, Old Navy, Bally Total Fitness, Kohl's, Ericsson, and V8. Her print advertising work includes campaigns for AT&T, FedEx, Venus Swimwear, Disney, Suave, Swiffer, 24 Hour Fitness, and Snickers. Additionally, Kara has been featured in numerous national magazines, such as Stuff, Maxim, Sports Illustrated, Cosmopolitan, Glamour, Redbook, Shape, and Fitness.
In 2005, Kara was selected to join the NBC game show Deal or No Deal as the model for briefcase number 9. Alongside Tameka Jacobs, she also served as an assistant for the syndicated daytime version of the show from 2008 until its cancellation in 2010. Kara returned to her role holding case number 9 when Deal or No Deal was revived on CNBC in 2018. Along with Megan Abrigo, she was one of only two models to appear across all five seasons of the series as well as the 2018 revival.
Beyond her regular show appearances, Kara participated in a Celebrity Edition of the GSN game show Catch 21 alongside fellow Deal or No Deal models Leyla Milani and Marisa Petroro. Playing for charity, Kara won the main game, earning $1,500 plus a $500 bonus for achieving the show's first 21. She subsequently earned an additional $1,000 in the Bonus Game, bringing her total charitable winnings to $2,500.
