Nigella Lawson

Nigella Lucy Lawson is an English food writer and television cook born on 6 January 1960. She is widely known for her best-selling cookery books and television series. Over her career, she has sold more than eight million cookery books worldwide and created her own cookware line, the Living Kitchen range.

Lawson was born in Wandsworth, London, to Nigel Lawson, a business and finance journalist who later served as a Conservative MP and Chancellor of the Exchequer, and Vanessa Salmon, an heiress to the J. Lyons and Co. fortune. Lawson attended several independent schools, moving schools nine times between the ages of 9 and 18. She subsequently graduated from Lady Margaret Hall, Oxford, with a second-class degree in medieval and modern languages, and spent time living in Florence, Italy.

Lawson began her career in publishing before entering journalism at age 23, writing book reviews for The Spectator and becoming its restaurant critic in 1985. In 1986, she became deputy literary editor of The Sunday Times. She later transitioned to freelance journalism, writing food, makeup, and lifestyle features for publications such as The Daily Telegraph, Vogue, The Observer, and The Times Magazine in the United Kingdom, as well as Gourmet, Bon Appétit, and The New York Times in the United States.

In 1998, Lawson published her first cookery book, How to Eat, which sold 300,000 copies and became a best-seller. Her second book, How to Be a Domestic Goddess, was published in 2000, selling 180,000 copies in four months and earning her the Author of the Year award at the 2001 British Book Awards. From 1999 to 2001, she hosted her first television series, Nigella Bites, on Channel 4. The show yielded an accompanying recipe book that sold over 300,000 copies in the United Kingdom.

Lawson presented Forever Summer with Nigella in 2002 and published Feast: Food that Celebrates Life in 2004. In 2005, she hosted the daytime talk show Nigella on ITV1. She hosted Nigella Feasts on the Food Network in the United States in 2006, followed by the BBC Two series Nigella's Christmas Kitchen. Its success led to the 2007 BBC Two series Nigella Express, which achieved high viewing figures and earned nominations for Outstanding Lifestyle Program and Outstanding Lifestyle Host at the 35th Daytime Emmy Awards.

Alongside her media work, Lawson launched her Living Kitchen cookware range in 2002, which reached an estimated value of £7 million. Her broadcast recommendations have repeatedly influenced consumer buying habits in the United Kingdom, significantly boosting sales for items like goose fat, prunes, and Riesling wine. Her broadcasting achievements have earned her honors including a Guild of Food Writers Award and two World Food Media Awards.
