Anne Burrell

Anne W. Burrell (September 21, 1969 – June 17, 2025) was an American chef, television personality, author, and culinary instructor. Recognized by her signature spiky blonde hair and energetic screen presence, she gained widespread television prominence as the host of the Food Network series Secrets of a Restaurant Chef and as a long-running co-host of Worst Cooks in America. Throughout her multi-decade career, she worked in top-tier kitchens in Italy and New York City, instructed aspiring culinary artists, and mentored amateur cooks on national broadcasts.

Early Life and Culinary Education

Born in Cazenovia, New York, Burrell developed an early interest in cooking while watching culinary legend Julia Child. She attended Canisius College in Buffalo, New York, graduating in 1991 with a Bachelor of Arts degree in English and Communications. Pursuing her passion for the culinary arts, she subsequently enrolled at the Culinary Institute of America, earning her associate degree in 1996. Burrell further honed her classical technique in Italy, where she studied at the Italian Culinary Institute for Foreigners in Asti and worked in various restaurants across the Tuscany and Umbria regions.

Professional Career and Television Success

Upon returning to the United States, Burrell served as a chef in premier New York City establishments, including Felidia, Savoy, and Centro Vinoteca. She also shared her expertise as an instructor at the Institute of Culinary Education. Burrell made her television debut as a sous chef alongside Mario Batali on Iron Chef America. Her magnetic personality led to her own solo show, Secrets of a Restaurant Chef, which debuted in 2008 and ran for nine seasons. Starting in 2010, she co-hosted Worst Cooks in America, guiding novice cooks through rigorous culinary boot camps. She also hosted Chef Wanted with Anne Burrell and authored best-selling cookbooks, including Cook Like a Rock Star.

Personal Life and Legacy

Burrell resided in Brooklyn, New York, and maintained strong ties to her hometown of Cazenovia. In October 2021, she married marketing executive Stuart Claxton in an autumn ceremony held in Cazenovia. Burrell passed away in June 2025 at the age of 55.
