Malavika Mohanan

Malavika Mohanan is an Indian actress who works predominantly in Tamil and Malayalam cinema. The daughter of cinematographer K. U. Mohanan, she has established an acting career across several regional language film industries in India, including Malayalam, Tamil, Hindi, and Kannada productions. She gained significant recognition for her work in both international festival cinema and mainstream commercial releases.

Mohanan was born on 4 August 1993 in Payyanur, located in the Kannur district of Kerala, and grew up in Mumbai. She completed a degree in Mass Media at Wilson College in Mumbai. Initially aiming to emulate her father as a cinematographer or film director, she also pursued an interest in fashion, launching an Indian ethnic fusion fashion blog named The Scarlet Window.

Her entry into acting came after accompanying her father to a commercial shoot featuring actor Mammootty, who asked about her interest in acting. She subsequently passed an audition and made her feature debut in the 2013 Malayalam romantic drama Pattam Pole opposite Dulquer Salmaan, also serving as her own costume designer for the film. She went on to appear in the Malayalam film Nirnayakam in 2015 and made her Kannada debut in Naanu Mattu Varalakshmi in 2016. In 2017, she played a police officer in the successful Malayalam crime thriller The Great Father.

Mohanan achieved a major career breakthrough with her Hindi film debut in Majid Majidi's drama Beyond the Clouds (2017). Playing Tara, a poor woman from Mumbai's Dhobi Ghat area opposite Ishaan Khatter, she lost eight kilograms in fifteen days and altered her personal grooming to fit the role. The film was screened at international festivals and released worldwide in April 2018, earning her critical praise for her performance.

Following her breakthrough, she expanded into Tamil cinema, debuting in Karthik Subbaraj's 2019 ensemble film Petta alongside Rajinikanth. In 2021, she starred as college lecturer Charulatha in the Tamil action thriller Master opposite Vijay, which became the highest-grossing film of her career. She subsequently appeared in the 2022 film Maaran opposite Dhanush, which premiered directly on Disney+ Hotstar.

Mohanan later starred in the 2023 Malayalam romantic drama Christy, the historical action fantasy Thangalaan opposite Vikram, and the 2024 Hindi action thriller Yudhra opposite Siddhant Chaturvedi. In 2025, she portrayed a Mumbai-based architect named Haritha opposite Mohanlal in Hridayapoorvam, receiving critical praise and commercial success. She was also cast to make her Telugu debut in the horror comedy film The RajaSaab starring Prabhas.
