Irina Lazareanu is a Canadian fashion model, musician, and writer who achieved international acclaim in the mid-2000s as a muse to top fashion designers, including Karl Lagerfeld and Nicolas Ghesquière. Renowned for her distinct bohemian aesthetic and theatrical catwalk style, Lazareanu became one of the most prominent faces in high fashion. Beyond modeling, she has cultivated a creative career in folk music, artistic direction, and published literature.

Early Life and Background

Born on June 8, 1982, in Cluj-Napoca, Romania, Lazareanu immigrated to Canada with her family at age five, settling near Montreal, Quebec. At age 13, she moved to London to pursue classical ballet at the Royal Academy of Dance until a knee injury ended her training. Seeking to support herself, she attended an open casting call in Montreal at age 17, signing her first modeling contract and establishing connections across London and Paris.

Fashion Career and Runway Success

Lazareanu's career reached high-fashion prominence in late 2005 when supermodel Kate Moss featured her in a guest-edited issue of Vogue Paris. This led to a cover for Vogue Italia photographed by Steven Meisel in January 2006. Lazareanu subsequently walked for world-renowned luxury brands, including Chanel, Balenciaga, Alexander McQueen, Lanvin, Yves Saint Laurent, Marc Jacobs, and Versace. As a key ambassador and muse for Karl Lagerfeld, she set an industry record for booking the highest number of runway shows in a single season. In 2007, Moss also selected her as the face of her debut Topshop clothing collection.

Music, Writing, and Other Ventures

Parallel to fashion, Lazareanu pursued music, touring with British rock band Babyshambles and collaborating with Pete Doherty. In 2007, she released her debut folk album, Some Place Along the Way, produced by Sean Lennon. She later published her autobiographical fashion book, Runway Bird: A Rock 'n' Roll Style Guide, in 2022. Lazareanu has since worked in creative direction and casting while continuing her creative work in Canada.
