About Fetty Wap
Willie Junior Maxwell II, known professionally as Fetty Wap, is an American rapper, singer, and songwriter. He gained widespread recognition in 2014 following the release of his breakout single "Trap Queen," which led to a recording contract with 300 Entertainment. Known for combining singing and rapping—a style he has referred to as "ignorant R&B"—his music is characterized by lighthearted lyrics, bouncy production, and signature catchphrases such as "1738!"
Maxwell was born on June 7, 1991, and raised in Paterson, New Jersey. Born with glaucoma in both eyes, doctors were unable to save his left eye and fitted him with an ocular prosthesis. He attended Eastside High School in Paterson before dropping out. In 2013, he developed an interest in making music, initially starting as a rapper before incorporating singing to pursue a distinct sound. He derived his stage name from slang for money, paired with an homage to rapper Gucci Mane's alias, Guwop.
Fetty Wap recorded "Trap Queen" in early 2014, and the song gained major commercial traction later that year. In 2015, he was included in XXL's Freshman Class and released top-ten singles including "679" and "My Way," the latter of which was remixed featuring Drake. With his fourth single "Again," he became the first act in the Hot Rap Songs chart's history to chart his first four entries in the top ten simultaneously. His eponymous debut studio album, released in September 2015, debuted at number one on the Billboard 200. That year, he also released collaborative mixtapes, including Coke Zoo with French Montana.
Following his debut album, Fetty Wap released singles such as "Jimmy Choo," "Wake Up," and "Make You Feel Good," and appeared on Fifth Harmony's single "All in My Head (Flex)." In 2016, he partnered to launch a mobile street racing game featuring himself and his music. Between 2016 and 2020, he released multiple mixtapes and extended plays, including Zoovier, Lucky No. 7, Bruce Wayne, and Trap & B. He also walked in a Philipp Plein fashion show during New York Fashion Week in 2017 and appeared on reality television series including Love & Hip Hop: Hollywood and Love & Hip Hop: New York.
Over the course of his career, Fetty Wap earned two Grammy Award nominations and won Best New Artist at the 2016 iHeartRadio Music Awards as well as Top New Artist at the 2016 Billboard Music Awards. He released his second studio album, The Butterfly Effect, in October 2021, followed by the viral 2022 single "Sweet Yamz" and his third studio album, King Zoo, in November 2023. After serving time in federal prison following a drug conviction—during which he earned his GED—he was released in January 2026. Shortly after his release, he issued his comeback album, Zavier, in March 2026.
