Donna Summer

Donna Adrian Gaines (December 31, 1948 – May 17, 2012), known professionally as Donna Summer, was an American singer and songwriter. She rose to international prominence during the 1970s disco era, earning the title "Queen of Disco" and building a global musical following. Over the course of her career, Summer earned widespread acclaim as one of the world's leading female vocalists and a pioneer of electronic dance music.

Born in Boston, Massachusetts, Summer was raised in the Mission Hill neighborhood as the third of seven children. Her musical debut occurred at age ten when she sang at her church. She later attended Jeremiah E. Burke High School, where she performed in school musicals. In 1967, she joined the blues rock band Crow and moved to New York City. Shortly before graduating high school, she landed the role of Sheila in the Munich production of the musical Hair, relocating to Germany in August 1968.

During her time in Europe, Summer performed in German-language theatrical productions including Ich bin ich, Godspell, and Show Boat, and later joined the Vienna Volksoper. She released several early singles under the names Donna Gaines and Gayn Pierre. While working in Munich as a backing singer and model, she met music producers Giorgio Moroder and Pete Bellotte. This partnership led to her 1974 debut European album, Lady of the Night, which resulted in a spelling error that established her stage name, Donna Summer.

In 1975, Summer recorded the disco track "Love to Love You Baby," which led to a contract with Casablanca Records. Released in North America, the single peaked at number two on the US Billboard Hot 100 in 1976. Her subsequent albums, A Love Trilogy and Four Seasons of Love, were certified gold in the United States. In 1977, her concept album I Remember Yesterday produced the hit single "I Feel Love," a track recognized for laying the groundwork for electronic dance music.

Summer appeared in the 1978 disco-themed film Thank God It's Friday, performing "Last Dance," which earned her a Grammy Award for Best Female R&B Vocal Performance. Later that year, she achieved her first US number-one single with "MacArthur Park" and her first number-one album with the live release Live and More. She became the first artist to earn three consecutive number-one double albums on the Billboard 200, followed by Bad Girls in 1979 and On the Radio: Greatest Hits Volumes I & II in 1980.

During the late 1970s and 1980s, Summer recorded major hits such as "Hot Stuff," "Bad Girls," "Dim All the Lights," and "No More Tears (Enough Is Enough)" with Barbra Streisand. In 1980, she transitioned to Geffen Records, releasing The Wanderer, which featured rock, new wave, and inspirational music. She returned to the top of the pop charts in 1983 with "She Works Hard for the Money" on Mercury Records, and later reached the top ten in 1989 with "This Time I Know It's for Real."

Summer continued recording music throughout her life, making her final Billboard Hot 100 appearance in 1999 with "I Will Go with You (Con te partirò)." She passed away from lung cancer on May 17, 2012, at her home in Naples, Florida. Summer was posthumously inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame in 2013 and the Songwriters Hall of Fame in 2025, alongside her earlier inductions into the Hollywood Walk of Fame, the Dance Music Hall of Fame, and the National Rhythm & Blues Hall of Fame.
