About Dieter Nuhr

Dieter Herbert Nuhr, born 29 October 1960, is a German kabarett artist, comedian, author, and television presenter. Recognized as one of Germany's most successful cabaret artists, drawing over 200,000 viewers annually, he serves as a mediator between classical comedy and intelligent stand-up. His work offers a critical view of social behavior, media, relationships, families, and German cultural stereotypes. He is also known for the provocative saying, "Wenn man keine Ahnung hat: Einfach mal Fresse halten."

Born in Wesel, Nuhr moved to Düsseldorf at age four and attended Leibniz-Gymnasium. From 1981 to 1989, he studied art and history at the Folkwang Hochschule in Essen, earning a teaching degree from the University of Duisburg-Essen in 1988. Between 1982 and 1992, he was an active artist with several works exhibited in the Rhineland.

Nuhr began writing texts with a school theater group before co-founding the cabaret duo V.E.V.-K.Barett with Frank Küster in 1986. They debuted with "Haben Sie sich ihre Schranknummer gemerkt?" and produced shows like "Pralle Pracht", "Schrille Stille", and "Zipfeltreffen". In 1994, Nuhr launched his solo career with "Nuhr am Nörgeln". Encouraged by a theater manager in Mönchengladbach, he abandoned stage requisites to focus on talking directly to the audience, establishing his signature minimalist style.

Nuhr has created numerous stage shows, audio CDs, and books, including "Nuhr weiter so", "Ich bin's Nuhr", "Gibt es intelligentes Leben?", and "Wer's glaubt, wird selig". His show "Ich bin's Nuhr" reached roughly 500,000 spectators, while his special "nuhr in Berlin" became the first German stand-up comedy created exclusively for Netflix in 2016. On television, Nuhr has appeared on shows such as "Die Harald Schmidt Show", "Quatsch Comedy Club", and "7 Tage, 7 Köpfe". He hosted annual review broadcasts on ZDF, presented the German Comedy Award for five years beginning in 2008, hosted "Satire Gipfel" from 2011 to 2014, and subsequently hosted "Nuhr im Ersten".

Beyond stand-up, Nuhr recorded "Buenos Dias Messias" for "A Tribute to Die Fantastischen Vier" in 2009, playing all instruments himself. He has produced weekly radio segments for WDR 2, World Cup TV specials, and programs for ARD-Themenwoche. In October 2014, charges alleging religious insult were filed against Nuhr over his satire regarding radical Islam, but the prosecution closed the case due to a lack of xenophobic sentiment.

Nuhr has won many honors, including the Deutscher Kleinkunstpreis in 1998 and the Deutscher Comedypreis for best live performance in 2003, becoming the only person to receive both awards. He won the Deutscher Comedypreis for best comedian in 2009, 2010, 2015, and 2016, alongside awards such as the Jacob-Grimm-Preis (2014) and the Leo Baeck Prize (2026). As of 2010, he resides in Ratingen, North Rhine-Westphalia.
