About Andrea Bocelli

Andrea Bocelli is an Italian tenor known for his career as a crossover performer who brought classical music to the top of international pop charts. Born on 22 September 1958, he rose to prominence in 1994 after winning the newcomers' section of the 44th Sanremo Music Festival with the song "Il mare calmo della sera". Throughout his career, he has sold over 90 million records worldwide, recording 15 solo studio albums across pop and classical genres, three greatest hits albums, and nine complete operas.

Bocelli was born to Alessandro and Edi Bocelli in the village of La Sterza, near Lajatico, Tuscany, and grew up on his family's farm alongside his younger brother, Alberto. Born with impaired sight due to congenital glaucoma, he completely lost his vision at age 12 after being struck in the eye during a football game. He developed a passion for music early in childhood, taking piano lessons from age six and later learning the flute, saxophone, trumpet, trombone, guitar, and drums. Inspired by a record of Franco Corelli, he pursued an interest in becoming a tenor and won his first song competition at age 14. He completed secondary school in 1980 and went on to study law at the University of Pisa. To support himself during his studies, he sang in piano bars, where he met his future wife Enrica in 1987. After earning his degree, he worked for one year as a court-appointed lawyer.

Bocelli's musical career gained momentum in 1992 when rock singer Zucchero held auditions for a demo of the song "Miserere". After hearing Bocelli, tenor Luciano Pavarotti urged Zucchero to record the song with him, leading to a hit across Europe. Bocelli toured with Zucchero in 1993 and subsequently signed with the Sugar Music label. Following his 1994 victory at the Sanremo Music Festival, he released his debut album, Il mare calmo della sera, which entered the Italian Top Ten and was certified platinum. That same year, he made his operatic debut as Macduff in Giuseppe Verdi's Macbeth in Pisa and performed before Pope John Paul II at St. Peter's Basilica.

In 1995, Bocelli performed "Con te partirò" at the Sanremo Festival. A re-recorded duet version with soprano Sarah Brightman, titled "Time to Say Goodbye", became an international hit and one of the best-selling singles of all time. His 1997 compilation album Romanza became one of the best-selling albums of all time. In 1998, Bocelli played Rodolfo in La bohème in Cagliari and made his United States operatic debut in Jules Massenet's Werther in Detroit. His 1999 release Sacred Arias became the highest-selling classical album by a solo artist in history and earned him a listing in the Guinness Book of World Records for simultaneously holding the top three positions on the US Classical Albums chart. His duet with Celine Dion, "The Prayer", recorded for the film Quest for Camelot, won a Golden Globe Award and was nominated for an Academy Award.

Bocelli continued to release successful recordings, including his 2009 holiday album My Christmas and his 2019 album Sì, which debuted at number one on both the UK Albums Chart and the US Billboard 200. His autobiographical novel, La musica del silenzio, was published in 1999 and adapted into the 2017 film The Music of Silence. Over his career, Bocelli was named a Grand Officer of the Order of Merit of the Italian Republic in 2006, elevated to Knight Grand Cross in 2025, received a star on the Hollywood Walk of Fame in 2010, and was awarded a gold medal for Merit in Serbia in 2022.
