About Victoria Vetri
Victoria Cecilia Vetri, also known as Angela Dorian and Victoria Rathgeb, is an American model and actress. Born on September 26, 1944, in San Francisco, California, to Italian immigrant parents, she spent her youth in California and began acting and modeling in her teens. She attended Hollywood High School from 1959 to 1963 and later studied art at Los Angeles City College.
Due to her Italian background, Vetri was frequently cast in ethnic screen roles early in her career. Her television appearances included playing a Native American in Cheyenne and a Mexican in Wagon Train. In film, she played a member of an ancient Maya civilization in Kings of the Sun (1963) and a Mexican character in Chuka (1967). While in high school, director Robert Wise considered casting her as Maria in West Side Story (1961), though the studio chose Natalie Wood.
In 1968, Vetri appeared briefly in Rosemary's Baby credited as Angela Dorian, where Mia Farrow's character noted her resemblance to the actress Victoria Vetri. In January 1969, she signed a multi-picture contract with Warner Bros.-Seven Arts and starred in When Dinosaurs Ruled the Earth, insisting on wearing a wig rather than bleaching her auburn hair. In 1971, columnist Hy Gardner nominated her as a new Hollywood sex symbol. Vetri has also clarified that she never appeared on Star Trek, addressing a common misconception regarding an episode role played by another actress.
Modeling under the name Angela Dorian, Vetri was featured as Playboy's Playmate of the Month for September 1967 and Playmate of the Year for 1968, winning $20,000 and a pink 1968 AMC AMX. Pranksters at NASA famously placed a nude photo of her inside the Apollo 12 astronaut cuff checklists. She later posed for the April 1984 Playmates Forever! Part Two pictorial. Although she used modeling to pursue acting roles, Vetri stated that it ultimately hindered her career through typecasting based on her appearance.
Vetri was married four times: to Hugh Terry Whettam (1963–1966), with whom she had a son; John Lee Hage (1966–1967); Heinz Gottfried Schwetz (1978–1983); and Bruce Rathgeb, whom she married in 1986.
In October 2010, Vetri was arrested after shooting Rathgeb inside their Hollywood apartment following an argument. Charged with attempted murder, the charge was later reduced to attempted voluntary manslaughter. She pleaded no contest in 2011 and received a nine-year state prison sentence. She and Rathgeb divorced in 2016 during her incarceration. Vetri was released on parole in April 2018 at the age of 73, and later stated that she planned to return to acting.
