Sophie Gray

Sophia Margaret "Sophie" Gray, later known as Sophia Margaret Caird, was a Scottish model best known for her sittings for her brother-in-law, the Pre-Raphaelite painter John Everett Millais. She was a younger sister of Euphemia "Effie" Gray, who married Millais following the annulment of her marriage to art critic John Ruskin. Known publicly as Sophie in her youth and Sophia in later life, Gray featured prominently in several notable British Victorian artworks.

Gray was born in October 1843 to Sophia Margaret Gray, née Jameson, and George Gray, a Scottish lawyer and businessman. She was raised at Bowerswell, a residence located near Perth, Scotland, as the tenth of fifteen children. During her childhood, Gray made frequent trips to London to stay with her elder sister Effie and Ruskin. Exposed early to the difficulties of her sister's unconsummated marriage, Gray occasionally served as a chaperone for Effie during social engagements.

In early 1854, Gray assisted Effie during her separation from Ruskin, aiding in the secret transport of documents to solicitors while traveling between London and Scotland. Around this time, Millais painted his first portrait of Gray. Operating as a go-between for Effie and Millais during the annulment proceedings, Gray regularly visited Millais's London studio. Following the formal dissolution of Effie's marriage in July 1854, Millais married Effie in June 1855.

Over the following years, Gray became a primary model for Millais, appearing in major Pre-Raphaelite paintings such as Autumn Leaves (1855–56) and Spring (or Apple Blossoms) (1856–59). In 1857, Millais completed a direct portrait titled Sophie Gray. This artwork was later owned by art collector George Price Boyce and was publicly exhibited alongside works by Dante Gabriel Rossetti. Works depicting Gray have since been shown in major gallery retrospectives at Tate Britain and the National Gallery of Art in Washington, D.C. She was also painted by the artist Charles Edward Perugini.

In 1868, Gray developed a severe illness attributed to anorexia nervosa, accompanied by restlessness and erratic behavior. In March 1869, Millais arranged for her treatment at Chiswick Asylum under Dr. Thomas Harrington Tuke. Gray subsequently resided with a colleague of Tuke and lived in Hammersmith before returning to her family home at Bowerswell. Her health fluctuated continuously for the rest of her life.

In July 1873, Gray married James Key Caird, a Dundee jute manufacturer, and the couple had a daughter, Beatrix Ada, in 1874. Gray spent her later years traveling and living primarily between Dundee and Paris. Millais painted a final portrait of her in 1880, which was exhibited at the Grosvenor Gallery. Following a decline in her condition due to prolonged emaciation, Gray returned to Dr. Tuke's care and died on March 15, 1882, at the age of 38.
