About Sidney Crosby

Sidney Patrick Crosby, born August 7, 1987, is a Canadian professional ice hockey player who serves as a centre and captain for the Pittsburgh Penguins of the National Hockey League (NHL). Nicknamed "Sid the Kid" and dubbed "The Next One," he was selected first overall by the Penguins in the 2005 NHL entry draft. Born and raised in Halifax, Nova Scotia, Crosby was one of the most lauded prospects in hockey history and is widely regarded as one of the greatest players of all time.

Crosby was born to Troy and Trina Crosby. His father was a goaltender drafted by the Montreal Canadiens who played in the Quebec Major Junior Hockey League (QMJHL). Crosby began playing hockey at age two and learned to skate at age three. He attended Astral Drive Junior High School and later transferred to Shattuck-Saint Mary's in Minnesota. He graduated from Harrison Trimble High School in 2005 while playing major junior hockey.

Crosby played midget hockey for the Dartmouth Subways before joining the Rimouski Océanic of the QMJHL in 2003. In his rookie season, he captured the Jean Béliveau Trophy as the league's leading scorer, along with the RDS/JVC Trophy and Michel Brière Memorial Trophy. In 2004–05, he led the QMJHL with 168 points, won the President's Cup, and earned the Guy Lafleur Trophy as postseason MVP. Rimouski reached the 2005 Memorial Cup final, where Crosby earned the Ed Chynoweth Trophy as top scorer. His jersey number 87 was retired by both Rimouski and the QMJHL in 2019.

After being drafted first overall by Pittsburgh in 2005, Crosby made his NHL debut during the 2005–06 season, recording 102 points and becoming the youngest player to reach 100 points in an NHL season. In his second season, he won the Art Ross Trophy with 120 points, becoming the youngest player and only teenager to win a scoring title in a major North American sports league, while also capturing the Hart Memorial Trophy and Lester B. Pearson Award. Named team captain in 2007, he led Pittsburgh to the 2008 Stanley Cup Final and a Stanley Cup championship in 2009, becoming the youngest captain in NHL history to win the Cup. Crosby later captained the Penguins to back-to-back Stanley Cup championships in 2016 and 2017, winning the Conn Smythe Trophy as playoff MVP both years.

Crosby won the Maurice Richard Trophy as the NHL's leading goal scorer in 2010 and 2017, as well as the Mark Messier Leadership Award in 2010. After a concussion in early 2011 sidelined him for much of two seasons, he returned to win the Ted Lindsay Award in 2013 and 2014, as well as his second Hart Memorial Trophy and Art Ross Trophy in 2014. In 2017, he was named one of the 100 Greatest NHL Players in history.

Internationally, Crosby won gold with Canada at the 2005 World Junior Championships and captured Olympic gold medals in 2010—scoring the overtime game-winner in the final—and in 2014 as captain. By winning the 2015 World Championship, he joined the Triple Gold Club as its only member to captain all three winning teams. He also captained Canada to gold at the 2016 World Cup of Hockey as tournament MVP, a championship at the 2025 4 Nations Face-Off, and silver at the 2026 Winter Olympics.
