Connor McDavid

Connor Andrew McDavid (born January 13, 1997) is a Canadian professional ice hockey player who serves as a centre and captain for the Edmonton Oilers of the National Hockey League (NHL). Selected first overall by the Oilers in the 2015 NHL entry draft, McDavid is widely considered one of the best players of all time. Over the course of his career, he has earned numerous league awards, including the Hart Memorial Trophy, the Art Ross Trophy, and the Conn Smythe Trophy.

McDavid was raised in Ontario by his parents, Kelly and Brian McDavid. He began playing ice hockey at a young age and won four Ontario Minor Hockey Association championships with the York Simcoe Express, a team coached by his father. In 2011, he joined the Toronto Marlboros of the Greater Toronto Hockey League (GTHL). The following year, he was named GTHL Player of the Year and won the Tim Adams Memorial Trophy as the tournament most valuable player during the OHL Cup.

In 2012, Hockey Canada granted McDavid exceptional player status, allowing him to enter junior hockey at age 15. He was selected first overall in the 2012 OHL Priority Selection by the Erie Otters, receiving the Jack Ferguson Award. During his tenure with Erie, he broke franchise rookie scoring records and was named OHL rookie of the year. By his final season in 2014–15, serving as team captain, McDavid recorded 120 points in 47 regular season games. He received the Red Tilson Trophy, Wayne Gretzky 99 Award, and CHL Player of the Year title. Internationally, he won gold medals representing Canada at the 2013 World U18 Championships and the 2015 World Junior Championships.

McDavid began his professional career after signing a three-year entry-level contract with the Edmonton Oilers in July 2015. He made his NHL debut on October 9, 2015, and scored his first goal five days later. Although a fractured clavicle limited him to 45 games during his 2015–16 rookie season, he registered 16 goals and 32 assists, earning a selection to the NHL All-Rookie Team and finishing as a finalist for the Calder Memorial Trophy.

In October 2016, the Oilers appointed the 19-year-old McDavid as the youngest captain in NHL history. During the 2016–17 season, he scored 100 points to become the second-youngest player to win the Art Ross Trophy as the league's leading scorer. That same year, he earned the Hart Memorial Trophy, the Ted Lindsay Award, and a selection to the NHL First All-Star Team. Across subsequent seasons, he reached the 100-point mark multiple times and won the Maurice "Rocket" Richard Trophy for the 2022–23 season as the league's leading goal-scorer.

During the 2023–24 season, McDavid captained the Oilers to the Stanley Cup Final. He won the Conn Smythe Trophy as the most valuable player of the 2024 playoffs, becoming the sixth player in NHL history to win the award despite not winning the Stanley Cup. Recognized for his speed, he has won the Fastest Skater competition at the NHL All-Star Skills Competition four times. His career accolades include four NHL First Team All-Star selections, six Art Ross Trophies, five Ted Lindsay Awards, and three Hart Memorial Trophies.
