He is best known for his roles in Disney productions, including the television film The Mystery in Dracula's Castle and the feature film Charley and the Angel, as well as his co-starring role as Scotty Stuart on the NBC Saturday morning series Sigmund and the Sea Monsters.
Kolden was born in Torrance, California, to Janet Louise Wilford and Lloyd Cameron Kolden, a design supervisor for Hughes Aircraft. He grew up with an older sister, Karen, an older brother, Lloyd Jr., and later a younger sister, Katherine. While working as an actor, Kolden attended Wilmington Junior High School in Wilmington, California, where his hobbies included playing drums, playing baseball, participating in sports, and riding a unicycle. He later graduated from Phineas Banning High School in 1979.
His entry into show business began after family friends noted his photogenic appearance and encouraged his mother to contact an agency. Signed by a commercial talent agent, Kolden was hired for his first three commercial auditions, working initially as a child model before transitioning into scripted acting. He made his television debut in 1971 on the comedy series Funny Face, followed by a co-starring role as Scott Reynolds on the 1972 CBS comedy series Me and the Chimp.
In early 1973, Kolden appeared as Leonard Booth alongside Johnny Whitaker in the Disney two-part television movie The Mystery in Dracula's Castle. He made his feature film debut that same year playing Rupert Appleby in Disney's Charley and the Angel. From 1973 to 1975, Kolden starred in the Sid & Marty Krofft Saturday morning series Sigmund and the Sea Monsters, and he appeared on the 1973 NBC Saturday Morning Preview special. His other film appearances include starring in A Whale of a Tale and his final acting role in the 1980 science-fiction film The Day Time Ended.
In 1993, Kolden transitioned to a career as a sound engineer, working as a sound mixer and sound effects editor on more than 200 television series and films. His technical credits include shows such as The X-Files, Everybody Loves Raymond, Hannah Montana, The Suite Life of Zack & Cody, and Cory in the House, alongside feature projects including Pinocchio's Revenge and Leprechaun 3.
For his sound work, Kolden won a Golden Reel Award in 2000 for the animated production Alvin and the Chipmunks Meet Frankenstein, and he received an Emmy Award nomination in 2004 for the television film 44 Minutes: The North Hollywood Shoot-Out. In his personal life, Kolden married Lorraine Vanek in October 1985, and they have six children. Since February 2003, he has held the position of Technical Arts Director at Discovery Church in Simi Valley, California.
