In 1948, her family moved to the United States and settled in Los Angeles, where she graduated from Hollywood High School in 1952. She studied acting, appeared in school plays, and attended both Los Angeles City College and the University of California, Los Angeles, while working as a cashier, usherette, and candy girl at Grauman's Chinese Theatre.

Lee's television career began with guest spots on programs such as The George Burns and Gracie Allen Show, The Roy Rogers Show, and Adventures of Superman. In 1953, while acting in a theater production of On the Town, she landed the role of bride Ruth in the film Seven Brides for Seven Brothers under the name Ruta Kilmonis. Throughout the late 1950s, she appeared in films including Anything Goes, Funny Face, Witness for the Prosecution, and Marjorie Morningstar.

During the 1960s and 1970s, Lee performed in numerous feature films and television shows. She played the female lead in the comedy Western Sergeants 3 and co-starred in Bullet for a Badman. On television, she made appearances in series such as The Lineup, Maverick, Perry Mason, Gunsmoke, The Twilight Zone, The Andy Griffith Show, Hogan's Heroes, and Love, American Style. She also appeared frequently on game shows such as Hollywood Squares and Match Game, and co-hosted High Rollers from 1974 to 1976.

In the 1980s and 1990s, Lee provided voice work for animated series like The Flintstone Comedy Show and The Smurfs, guest-starred on television shows including Fantasy Island and Roseanne, and played a recurring role in Coming of Age. She also performed in stage productions, including playing the title role in Peter Pan and roles in Steel Magnolias and The Best Little Whorehouse in Texas. In 2024, she appeared as a guest judge on RuPaul's Drag Race All Stars.

Off-camera, Lee was married to restaurant executive Webster B. Lowe Jr. from 1976 until his death in 2020. She spent over 50 years involved with the charitable organization The Thalians, serving as board chairman and co-producing its annual ball before stepping down in 2011. Additionally, Lee personally petitioned Soviet Premier Nikita Khrushchev in 1964 to secure a pardon for her grandmother, who subsequently moved to California.

For her contributions to entertainment, Lee was dedicated a Golden Palm Star on the Palm Springs Walk of Stars in 1995, received a Golden Boot Award in 2002, and earned a star on the Hollywood Walk of Fame in 2006. She was inducted into the National Lithuanian American Hall of Fame in 2013 and granted Lithuanian citizenship in 2019.
