Patrick Swayze

Patrick Wayne Swayze (August 18, 1952 – September 14, 2009) was an American actor, singer-songwriter, and dancer. He achieved widespread recognition for his romantic, action, and comedic roles across a variety of feature films, television productions, and stage projects. Among his accomplishments, he received three Golden Globe Award nominations during his career and was honored with a star on the Hollywood Walk of Fame in 1997. Additionally, he was named "Sexiest Man Alive" by People magazine in 1991.

Swayze was born in Houston, Texas, to Jesse Wayne Swayze, an engineering draftsman, and Patsy Swayze, a dancer, choreographer, and dance instructor. Raised in the Oak Forest neighborhood, he attended St. Rose of Lima Catholic School, Frank Black Middle School, Waltrip High School, and San Jacinto College Central. During his youth, Swayze engaged in classical ballet, ice skating, acting, football, and martial arts such as Wushu, Taekwondo, and Aikido. In 1972, he moved to New York City to complete his formal dance training at the Harkness Ballet and Joffrey Ballet schools.

Swayze began his professional career as a dancer for the Disney Theatrical Group in Disney on Parade and later starred as Danny Zuko in a Broadway production of Grease. He made his feature film debut in 1979 in Skatetown, U.S.A., followed by appearances in television programs like M*A*S*H and television movies such as Return of the Rebels. His acting profile rose significantly after playing Darrel "Darry" Curtis in Francis Ford Coppola's 1983 film adaptation of The Outsiders. He subsequently appeared in films including Uncommon Valor, Red Dawn, and Youngblood, as well as the 1985 television miniseries North and South.

Swayze achieved breakthrough stardom in 1987 with the romantic drama film Dirty Dancing, playing resort dance instructor Johnny Castle. For the movie's soundtrack, he co-wrote and performed the song "She's Like the Wind," which peaked at number three on the Billboard Hot 100. The performance earned him his first Golden Globe nomination. He went on to star in the action film Road House in 1989 and the 1990 supernatural romance Ghost, which became the highest-grossing film of that year and earned him a second Golden Globe nomination.

Following Ghost, Swayze starred in the 1991 action hit Point Break and earned a third Golden Globe nomination for his role in the 1995 comedy To Wong Foo, Thanks for Everything! Julie Newmar. He later appeared in the 2001 cult thriller Donnie Darko, the film Waking Up in Reno, and the 2004 miniseries project King Solomon's Mines. Swayze also expanded into producing with the 2003 film One Last Dance, which he co-produced and starred in alongside his wife, Lisa Niemi.

In 2006, Swayze made his London West End debut as Nathan Detroit in Guys and Dolls, having previously performed on Broadway in Goodtime Charley and Chicago. He provided voice work for the animated film The Fox and the Hound 2 and appeared in the 2009 film Powder Blue alongside his brother Don. His final acting role was starring as FBI agent Charles Barker in the 2009 television series The Beast. Swayze was diagnosed with stage IV pancreatic cancer in early 2008 and died from the illness on September 14, 2009, at the age of 57.
