About Pat Fleet

Pat Trumble Fleet is an American voice actress who is widely recognized for her extensive voice recording work for telephone companies across the United States. Since beginning her career in 1981, she has produced tens of thousands of recordings for major telecommunications providers, including AT&T, Verizon, Qwest, and the former Bell System companies. She is particularly known as the voice behind AT&T's sound trademark, uttering the company's name prior to operator-assisted or credit card-paid calls and upon calling AT&T customer service lines.

Fleet's work spans a variety of automated telecommunications services. She provides the voice for most star services offered by AT&T local telephone companies, such as call blocking and last-call return. Additionally, her recordings are heard on calls handled through 1-800-CALL-ATT and international access services, including USADirect.

Her career in the industry began in 1981 when she worked alongside Jane Barbe recording messages for the Audichron Company, now known as ETC. In this role, she voiced automated announcements for time, temperature, and weather conditions. Fleet was also selected as the voice of the Bell System's Automated Coin Toll System, where she quoted call rates and instructed callers on collecting charges for coin-paid calls.

Over the course of her career, Fleet became the primary voice for numerous telephone company intercept recordings. These automated messages inform callers of call failures, typically following a special information tone and beginning with the phrase "We're sorry...".

Fleet's voice gained widespread recognition through its continuous use by phone companies. Internal customer studies conducted by AT&T revealed that callers consistently preferred her voice over other options. Consequently, in 1989, she was chosen to serve as the signature voice for the AT&T sound trademark.

In addition to her telecommunications recordings, Fleet's voice work extends into popular media. She uncreditedly voiced the automated AT&T message played at the conclusion of Marty McFly's future video call in the feature film Back to the Future Part II.
