Nancy Fleming

Nancy Anne Fleming is an American beauty pageant titleholder who is best known for winning the title of Miss America 1961. Born on May 20, 1942, she was raised in Montague, Michigan. She initially competed in local pageantry as Miss White Lake before earning the state title of Miss Michigan, which led to her national victory in the Miss America pageant on September 10, 1960.

Following her pageant success, Fleming pursued her higher education. She attended Michigan State University, residing in West Landon Hall during her freshman year. Although her time at the university involved challenges due to intense public recognition and unwanted attention after her television appearances, she graduated in 1964. Michigan State University later recognized her as one of its Accomplished Women Graduates. She went on to earn a teaching certificate from the University of California, Berkeley in 1966.

Fleming began her professional career working as an elementary school teacher. She later transitioned into the entertainment industry, establishing a career as a program host and interviewer. Over the course of her broadcasting career, she worked with several major television networks, including ABC-TV, the Cable Health Network (which later became Lifetime), and PBS.

In addition to her television hosting work, Fleming made acting appearances. In 1984, she appeared in an episode of the television series The Love Boat. The episode featured a group of former Miss America titleholders, including Jean Bartel (Miss America 1943), Marian McKnight (Miss America 1957), and Vanessa L. Williams (Miss America 1984).

In her personal life, Fleming was first married to William Frederic Johnson, with whom she has two children, Ingrid and Steig. In 1978, she married radio and television personality Jim Lange, gaining three stepchildren: Nick, Romney, and Gavin. Her marriage to Lange lasted until his death in 2014.
