About Leon Bridges
Todd Michael "Leon" Bridges, born July 13, 1989, is an American singer, songwriter, record producer, and actor. He initially gained recognition as a throwback act with his 2015 debut album Coming Home, which revived 1960s soul music. His musical style spans several genres, including 1960s soul, 1980s quiet storm, 1990s neo-soul, contemporary R&B, folk, and country. Bridges has released multiple studio albums, earned Grammy nominations, and won a Grammy Award for Best Traditional R&B Performance.
Bridges was born in Atlanta, Georgia, and raised in Fort Worth and Crowley, Texas. He grew up in a religious household where secular music was forbidden, though his father bought him Usher's album 8701 in 2004. While attending Crowley High School, he experienced bullying from students who told him he did not fit the mold of what a Black man should be. Later, at Tarrant County College, he studied dance—including hip-hop, ballet, modern, African, and jazz—and joined the Velocity Dance Company while considering a career as a choreographer.
During college, Bridges joined a community of musicians, taught himself guitar, and began writing songs. At age 18, after his mother urged him to set his life on the right path, he joined a Reformed church and discarded his R&B records. Influenced by progressive R&B artists Frank Ocean and Miguel, he began writing Christian R&B songs, performing under the name Lost Child at open mics. He later adopted the stage name Leon Bridges because people noted his resemblance to actor Leon Robinson. In 2010, Bridges dropped out of college to support his mother, working as a busser and dishwasher while playing open mics.
Bridges' breakthrough came after meeting musicians Austin Jenkins and Joshua Block of White Denim, who were impressed by his performance of "Coming Home." They recorded tracks using vintage equipment, and after Bridges posted demo songs on SoundCloud in late 2014, "Coming Home" received local radio play and viral success on Spotify. Bridges signed with Columbia Records in December 2014. His debut album, Coming Home, released in 2015, earned a nomination for Best R&B Album at the 58th Annual Grammy Awards.
Bridges released his second album, Good Thing, in May 2018, which peaked at number three on the chart. Its single "Bet Ain't Worth The Hand" won Best Traditional R&B Performance at the 61st Annual Grammy Awards. In July 2021, he released his third studio album, Gold-Diggers Sound, which peaked at number 17 and also earned a Grammy nomination for Best R&B Album.
Beyond his solo studio albums, Bridges collaborated with Khruangbin on the EPs Texas Sun (2020) and Texas Moon (2022), and released the single "Sweeter" with Terrace Martin in 2020. As an actor, he portrayed Gil Scott-Heron in the 2018 film First Man and starred as River in the 2023 drama film The Young Wife.
Bridges released his personal fourth studio album, Leon, featuring folk and country influences, in October 2024 following the single "Peaceful Place." In July 2026, he released four singles from his fifth studio album, Happiness Anytime, produced by J Lloyd-Watson and Lydia Kitto of Jungle, scheduled for release in September 2026.
