About Kilo Kish
Lakisha Kimberly Robinson, known professionally as Kilo Kish, is an American singer-songwriter and visual artist. She was born in Orlando, Florida, on May 10, 1990. During her youth, she attended Glen Rock Elementary School in Bergen County, New Jersey, before returning to Orlando and graduating from Winter Park High School.
At age 18, Robinson received a scholarship to attend the Pratt Institute in New York. After taking a year off and working several jobs, she enrolled at the Fashion Institute of Technology to study textile design, graduating in 2012. Her entrance into music occurred when her roommates established an in-home studio for a project called the Kool Kats Klub. Through this exposure, she met Matt Martians of The Internet and collaborated on tracks for The Jet Age of Tomorrow and The Internet.
Kish released her debut EP, Homeschool, on April 2, 2012. The project was produced by previous collaborators including The Internet and Pyramid Vritra, and it was labeled one of the best albums of 2012 by Complex. Later that year, she released the song Watergun on SoundCloud and the single Navy on The Blue Rider record label, which featured a remix by MeLo-X and a music video co-directed by Kish and Ben Rayner.
In February 2013, Kish released her free mixtape K+, featuring guest appearances from artists such as Childish Gambino, Star Slinger, SBTRKT, A$AP Ferg, Earl Sweatshirt, and Matt Martians. She expanded on the mixtape in December 2013 by releasing a digital art zine titled K+ THE BOOK. Her second EP, Across, was released in July 2014 in collaboration with the fashion and record label Maison Kitsune, followed by Across Remixes the next year.
Kish's debut studio album, Reflections in Real Time, was released on February 29, 2016. Her song Taking Responsibility from the album was featured in an episode of the HBO television drama Euphoria. In 2017, she was featured on the track Out of Body from the deluxe edition of the Gorillaz album Humanz and contributed across Vince Staples' album Big Fish Theory.
In August 2018, Kish released the single Elegance, which Pitchfork named Best New Track, followed by the release of her EP mothe in September 2018. Late in 2019, she released the singles Bite Me, Nice Out, and Spark, leading to her EP Redux in December 2019. Produced alongside recurring collaborator Ray Brady, Redux served as a sister project to mothe and explored themes of perseverance.
Kish initiated her next album rollout in July 2021 with the single American Gurl, co-directing its music video with Matt Cowen. She subsequently released the singles Bloody Future and the Vince Staples collaboration New Tricks: Art, Aesthetics, and Money. On March 25, 2022, Kish released the full 14-track album American Gurl, which featured guest appearances by Miguel, Jean Dawson, Vince Staples, and Jesse Boykins III.
