About Keith Urban

Keith Lionel Urban is an Australian and American country singer, songwriter, and guitarist. He is best known for his successful country music career, having released 12 studio albums as a solo artist along with one album with his former band The Ranch. Recognized with four Grammy Awards, 15 Academy of Country Music Awards, 13 CMA Awards, and six ARIA Music Awards, Urban has charted 37 singles on the US Billboard Hot Country Songs chart, including 18 number-one hits.

Urban was born in Whangārei, Northland, New Zealand, to Marienne and Robert Urban, and moved to Caboolture, Queensland, Australia, at two years of age. Encouraged by his parents' interest in country music, he received a ukulele at four, took up the guitar at six, and later took formal lessons. During his youth, he competed in local talent shows, acted in theatre, and drew musical inspiration from guitarists Mark Knopfler and Lindsey Buckingham. In 1980, he appeared on the TV talent show New Faces, later performing in the duo Silver Spirit and the group Kids Country. After winning the Star Maker talent quest at the Tamworth Country Music Festival in 1990, he signed a recording contract with EMI Music Australia.

Urban released a self-titled debut album in Australia in 1990 before relocating to Nashville, Tennessee, in 1992. In 1995, he formed the band The Ranch, which released a self-titled album through Capitol Nashville in 1997 and charted two singles. Urban made his solo American debut in 1999 with a second self-titled album. Certified platinum in the United States, it produced his first Billboard Hot Country Songs number-one single, "But for the Grace of God."

In 2002, Urban released his second American album, Golden Road. It featured "Somebody Like You," named by Billboard as the biggest country hit of the 2000s decade, and "You'll Think of Me," which earned Urban his first Grammy Award. His 2004 album, Be Here, became his highest-selling release, certified 4× Platinum and producing number-one hits including "Days Go By" and "Making Memories of Us." He followed this with Love, Pain & the Whole Crazy Thing in 2006, featuring the Grammy-winning single "Stupid Boy," and Defying Gravity in 2009, which yielded the number-one singles "Sweet Thing" and "Only You Can Love Me This Way."

Urban continued his recording career with Get Closer in 2010 and Fuse in 2013, the latter generating four number-one singles on the Country Airplay chart. His 2016 album Ripcord produced the hit "Blue Ain't Your Color," which spent 12 weeks atop the Hot Country Songs chart. His subsequent releases include Graffiti U in 2018, The Speed of Now Part 1 in 2020—featuring the global duet "One Too Many" with Pink—and his twelfth studio album, High, in 2024. Over his career, Urban has collaborated with various artists across genres, including Dolly Parton, Carrie Underwood, Eric Church, Brad Paisley, and Peter Frampton.

Beyond his album releases, Urban wrote and performed "For You" for the film Act of Valor, receiving nominations at the 70th Golden Globe Awards and 18th Critics' Choice Awards. In television, he served as a coach on the Australian version of The Voice and as a judge on American Idol. In October 2013, he introduced his own signature line of guitars and accessories.
