She released three self-produced solo albums during her youth before competing on the fifth season of the singing competition Nashville Star in 2007, where she finished in seventh place.

After moving to Austin, Texas, Musgraves recorded songs for independent label Triple Pop in 2008 and collaborated with artists such as the Josh Abbott Band. During this period, she supported her music through numerous television performances and headlining tours, while also contributing backing vocals and collaborations with artists including Miguel and the Zac Brown Band.

In 2018, Musgraves achieved widespread mainstream breakthrough with her third major studio album, Golden Hour.
