Over the course of his career, he has earned widespread acclaim, selling more than 30 million albums and singles according to the RIAA. His honors include a Grammy Award, an Academy of Country Music Award, and four Billboard Music Awards.

Bryan is the son of Dewayne Bryan and Annette DeAnn Bryan, and has a sister named Mackenzie. After his family relocated to Oklahoma during his eighth-grade year, his parents divorced when he was 12. He began writing songs at age 14 and enlisted in the United States Navy at age 17 in 2013, continuing a family tradition. Serving eight years as an Aviation Ordnanceman Second Class with tours in Bahrain and Djibouti, Bryan wrote music during his spare time. He received an honorable discharge in 2021 to pursue music full-time, later earning his bachelor's degree in psychology in late 2023.

Bryan began uploading music to YouTube in 2017, where his song "Heading South," recorded outside his Navy barracks, became a viral hit. On August 24, 2019, he released his self-produced debut studio album, DeAnn, dedicated to his late mother, followed by his second self-produced album, Elisabeth, in May 2020 and the EP Quiet, Heavy Dreams in November 2020. He made his live concert debut in Medford, Oregon, in late 2019 and later performed at the Grand Ole Opry in April 2021.

After signing with Warner Records, Bryan released his major-label debut, the 34-track triple album American Heartbreak, in May 2022. It reached number five on the Billboard 200, led by the top-ten single "Something in the Orange." In August 2023, he released his self-titled fourth album, which debuted at number one on the Billboard 200. Its lead single, "I Remember Everything" featuring Kacey Musgraves, topped the Billboard Hot 100, Hot Country Songs, and Hot Rock & Alternative Songs charts simultaneously, winning a Grammy Award for Best Country Duo/Group Performance.

Bryan released his fifth studio album, The Great American Bar Scene, in July 2024, reaching number two on the Billboard 200. In September 2025, he set a United States record for the largest attendance at a ticketed concert by a single headlining act, performing to 112,408 fans at Michigan Stadium. In January 2026, Bryan released his sixth studio album, With Heaven on Top, which debuted at number one on the Billboard 200.
