About Jordan Chiles
Jordan Lucella Elizabeth Chiles, born April 15, 2001, is an American artistic gymnast and a member of the United States women's national gymnastics team since 2013. She is best known for her accomplishments in elite international and collegiate gymnastics, including contributing to the team silver medal at the 2020 Summer Olympics and the team gold medal at the 2024 Summer Olympics. Additionally, Chiles earned team gold and two individual silver medals at the 2022 World Championships, and she is one of four female gymnasts to claim NCAA, World, and Olympic championship titles.
Chiles was born in Tualatin, Oregon, to Timothy and Gina Chiles, and was named after basketball player Michael Jordan. She grew up in Vancouver, Washington, alongside her four siblings. In 2019, she relocated to Spring, Texas, to train at the World Champions Centre alongside Simone Biles. In 2023, Chiles experienced the loss of her aunt and grandfather, later noting that her grandfather's memory provided key motivation for her continued athletic career.
Her elite junior career began in 2013 at the American Classic. Over the following years, Chiles earned numerous national and international junior podium finishes. Her early successes included vault titles at the 2014 City of Jesolo Trophy, the 2015 U.S. National Championships, the 2016 International Gymnix, and the 2016 U.S. Classic, as well as the junior all-around title at the 2016 City of Jesolo Trophy.
Making her senior debut in 2017, Chiles made her senior international debut at the 2018 Stuttgart World Cup. After switching training facilities in 2019, she went on to hit every routine in the season leading up to the 2020 Summer Olympics. At the Tokyo Games, Chiles competed in qualifications and stepped in during the team final following Biles' withdrawal, helping the United States capture the team silver medal.
In 2022, Chiles secured three medals at the Paris World Challenge Cup before competing at the 2022 World Championships, where she helped the U.S. win team gold while earning individual silver medals on vault and floor exercise. At the 2023 Pan American Games, she claimed team gold, an individual silver on vault, and bronze in the all-around.
At the 2024 Summer Olympics in Paris, Chiles contributed scores across all four apparatuses to secure team gold. In the floor exercise final, a scoring inquiry by her coach initially elevated her to the bronze medal position. Following appeals regarding inquiry timing, the Court of Arbitration for Sport (CAS) reversed the score adjustment, leading the International Olympic Committee to reallocate the bronze medal. Subsequent legal appeals led the Federal Supreme Court of Switzerland to partially overturn the CAS ruling on January 29, 2026, returning the case to CAS for reconsideration.
In collegiate athletics, Chiles joined the UCLA Bruins gymnastics team in late 2021 after performing on the Gold Over America Tour. During her NCAA career, she has won two Pac-12 titles, two Big Ten titles, and three NCAA championship titles. She paused her studies following the 2023 NCAA season to focus on the Paris Olympics, confirming her intention to return to UCLA for the 2025 season.
