Laing was born in 1989 to Penny and Nicholas Laing. He was raised alongside an older brother named Alexander, a younger brother named George, and a younger sister named Emily. He was privately educated at Summer Fields School between 1997 and 2002, followed by Radley College, before attending the University of Leeds to study Theatre and Performance. He is a great-great-grandson of Sir Alexander Grant, 1st Baronet, who created the McVitie's digestive biscuit, and a great-nephew of Lord Laing of Dunphail.
In 2011, Laing gained public recognition after joining Made in Chelsea during its second series. He subsequently appeared across various television broadcasts, including the first series of Celebrity Hunted alongside Spencer Matthews in 2017 and an episode of The Great Stand Up to Cancer Bake Off in 2018. That same year, he participated in the Channel 4 documentary series Famous and Fighting Crime, in which he served as a volunteer police officer in Peterborough. He later appeared on Richard Osman's House of Games in 2021.
In August 2019, Laing was cast in the seventeenth series of Strictly Come Dancing paired with Oti Mabuse, but a foot injury forced his withdrawal prior to the launch show. He returned the following year for the eighteenth series with professional dancer Karen Hauer, reaching the final as one of the runners-up. He was the first person to appear on two different series of the show.
In addition to reality television, Laing has pursued business, podcasting, acting, and radio. In 2012, he co-founded Candy Kittens with Ed Williams to produce vegan and vegetarian sweets. He has hosted podcasts including Private Parts alongside Francis Boulle, 6 Degrees from Jamie and Spencer on BBC Sounds, and Newly Weds with his wife. His acting appearances include roles in Hollyoaks, Murder In Successville, Drunk History, and Absolutely Fabulous: The Movie. On Series 12 Episode 3 of 8 Out of 10 Cats Does Countdown, he set a world record for catching 18 jelly beans in his mouth in 30 seconds.
Laing began presenting on BBC Radio 1 in October 2022, initially covering for Mollie King, before permanently taking over Jordan North's role on the Going Home show in March 2024. In his personal life, Laing married Sophie Habboo in 2023, holding ceremonies in London and Marbella. The couple lives in London and Gloucestershire and welcomed their son, Ziggy, in December 2025. In 2025, Laing also completed five ultramarathons over five days for charity.
