Imogen Heap

Imogen Jennifer Jane Heap, born 9 December 1977, is an English musician, singer, songwriter, record producer, and entrepreneur. She is recognized as a pioneer in pop music, particularly electropop, and music technology. Known for her innovative approach to musical composition, contributions to film and television soundtracks, and independent online success, Heap has achieved international acclaim through both solo works and collaborative projects.

Born in Romford, England, Heap grew up in Havering-atte-Bower and showed an early interest in music. She learned to play piano as a young child and later received classical training in instruments including cello and clarinet while attending Friends' School. During her youth, she taught herself music technology, sampling, and song sequencing using Cubase on an Atari ST computer. At age 16, she enrolled at the BRIT School for Performing Arts & Technology in Croydon, where she began regularly writing songs and singing.

Heap signed her first record contract with independent label Almo Sounds at age 18, releasing her debut studio album, I Megaphone, in 1998. After the label was acquired and she was dropped from her contract, Heap formed the electronic duo Frou Frou with producer Guy Sigsworth in 2000. Their only studio album, Details, was released in 2002, and its track "Let Go" gained wider recognition after appearing in the 2004 film Garden State.

Following Frou Frou's disbandment, Heap remortgaged her home to self-finance her second solo album, Speak for Yourself (2005), which she wrote, produced, recorded, mixed, and arranged independently on her label, Megaphonic Records. The album served as her breakout work and featured the lead single "Hide and Seek," which achieved international success after appearing on the television series The O.C. Her follow-up single "Headlock" later went viral on TikTok in 2024, leading to her first Billboard Hot 100 entry and her highest UK Singles Chart placement in 2025.

Heap continued her solo career with Ellipse (2009), which peaked in the top five of the Billboard 200 chart and featured the single "First Train Home." Her fourth album, Sparks (2014), topped the Billboard Dance/Electronic Albums chart. She also found commercial success with her 2016 children's track "The Happy Song" and collaborated with Clams Casino on a 2020 re-release of "I'm God."

Beyond traditional releases, Heap developed the Mi.Mu gloves, a line of musical gloves, and became known for her advocacy and work with artificial intelligence in music during the 2020s. She composed the music for the play Harry Potter and the Cursed Child, earning a Drama Desk Award. Over her career, Heap has won a Grammy Award for Best Engineered Album, Non-Classical for Ellipse, a Grammy Award for Album of the Year for her production work on Taylor Swift's 1989, an Ivor Novello Award, and an honorary doctorate from Berklee College of Music.
