Hank Green

William Henry Green II, born May 5, 1980, is an American YouTuber, science communicator, entrepreneur, author, and podcaster. Widely known for his engaging approach to educational content, he first gained prominent internet recognition alongside his older brother, author John Green, through their joint YouTube channel, Vlogbrothers. Over the years, Hank Green has expanded his digital footprint to become one of the web's most influential science popularizers, building multi-platform educational networks and ventures that reach millions of viewers globally.

Early Life and Education

Green was born in Birmingham, Alabama, and spent much of his childhood in Orlando, Florida. He attended Eckerd College in St. Petersburg, Florida, where he earned a Bachelor of Science degree in biochemistry. He later moved to Montana to attend the University of Montana, completing a Master of Science degree in environmental studies. His early career combined environmental blogging with digital writing, leading him to launch the environmental technology blog EcoGeek, which established his passion for making complex scientific topics accessible to general audiences.

Online Career and Content

In 2007, Hank and John Green launched Brotherhood 2.0, a daily video project on YouTube that laid the foundation for Vlogbrothers and the online community known as Nerdfighteria. The success of Vlogbrothers spawned numerous educational programs, most notably Crash Course and SciShow, both produced under their production company Complexly. These channels offer bite-sized, high-production video series covering biology, chemistry, history, and physics. Green also gained substantial followings on platforms like TikTok and Instagram, where he regularly answers science questions, debunks internet myths, and breaks down complex natural phenomena for short-form video audiences.

Business Ventures and Author Life

Beyond content creation, Green is a prolific media entrepreneur and author. In 2010, he co-founded VidCon, which grew into the premier annual international convention for online video creators and fans. He also co-founded DFTBA Records, a merchandise company tailored for online creators, and Subbable, a fan-funding platform later acquired by Patreon. As an author, Green published his debut science fiction novel, An Absolutely Remarkable Thing, in 2018, followed by its sequel, A Beautifully Foolish Endeavor, in 2020, both becoming New York Times bestsellers.

Personal Life

Green lives in Missoula, Montana, with his wife, Katherine Green, whom he married in 2006, and their son. In addition to his online and business work, Green is active in charitable causes, co-hosting the annual Project for Awesome online fundraiser with his brother.
