She was raised Roman Catholic by her parents, Sandy Garossino and Maurice Boucher, and attended Catholic school in Vancouver. Following her parents' divorce when she was 11, her mother remarried, contributing to a multicultural upbringing. In 2006, Boucher graduated from Lord Byng Secondary School and relocated to Montreal to attend McGill University, though she was later expelled in December 2010.
Boucher began releasing self-taught music on Myspace under the stage name Grimes in 2007. She released her debut studio album, Geidi Primes, inspired by the Dune series, in January 2010 through Arbutus Records, followed by her second album, Halfaxa, in October of the same year. After promoting her music and touring beyond Montreal, she released the split EP Darkbloom with d'Eon in 2011 and opened for Lykke Li on tour. Grimes signed with the record label 4AD in January 2012 and released her breakout third studio album, Visions, which yielded the singles "Genesis" and "Oblivion."
In 2013, Visions won the Juno Award for Electronic Album of the Year, and Grimes was named Artist of the Year at the Webby Awards. She began using Jay-Z's management company, Roc Nation, in December 2013. Following several collaborations and standalone releases, Grimes released her fourth studio album, Art Angels, in November 2015. Recorded primarily with real instruments, the album reached number one on the Billboard US Top Alternative Album chart and was named the best album of the year by publications including NME, Exclaim!, and Stereogum. In 2016, she received the SOCAN International Award and the Harper's Bazaar Musician of the Year Award.
Throughout her career, Grimes has directed and co-directed numerous music videos, including "Oblivion," "Flesh Without Blood," and "Venus Fly," the latter featuring Janelle Monáe and winning a MuchMusic Video Award. She also earned a 2017 Juno Award for Video of the Year for "Kill V. Maim." Her musical collaborations include tracks with Blood Diamonds, Janelle Monáe, Bleachers, Hana, Poppy, and Bring Me the Horizon. Additionally, she composed the theme music for the Netflix animated series Hilda and contributed the song "Medieval Warfare" to the soundtrack of the 2016 film Suicide Squad.
Grimes announced her fifth studio album, Miss Anthropocene, which was released in 2020. Beyond her core music career, she expanded into other media projects, including a voice role in the 2020 action role-playing video game Cyberpunk 2077 and a judging role on the music competition game show Alter Ego.
