About Denis Shapovalov
Denis Viktorovich Shapovalov, born April 15, 1999, is a Canadian professional tennis player who has reached career-high ATP rankings of world No. 10 in singles and No. 44 in doubles. Known for his aggressive, high-risk style featuring a left-handed one-handed backhand, strong forehand, and powerful serve, he has won four ATP Tour singles titles. He stands as the third highest-ranked Canadian male singles player in history, behind Milos Raonic and Félix Auger-Aliassime.
Shapovalov was born in Tel Aviv, Israel, to Tessa Shapovalova, a former Soviet and Israeli tennis player, and Viktor Shapovalov. Before his first birthday, his family emigrated to Canada and settled in Vaughan, Ontario. He began playing tennis at age five, coached initially by his mother, who later opened the TessaTennis academy to support his training. As his needs expanded, former Tennis Canada manager Adriano Fuorivia was hired to coach and travel with him.
During his junior career, Shapovalov reached a world ranking as high as No. 2 and compiled an 86–32 singles record. He won the junior doubles title at the 2015 US Open with Félix Auger-Aliassime and helped Canada capture its first Junior Davis Cup title that same year. In 2016, Shapovalov captured the junior singles title at the Wimbledon Championships with a final victory over Alex de Minaur.
Shapovalov transitioned to the professional tour, earning early titles on the ITF Futures and ATP Challenger circuits. In 2017, he achieved a major breakthrough at the Canadian Open by defeating Juan Martín del Potro and Rafael Nadal, becoming the youngest player ever to reach an ATP Masters 1000 semi-final. He later qualified for the 2017 US Open and reached the fourth round. In recognition of his breakout season, he received the ATP Most Improved Player award, the ATP Star of Tomorrow award, and Canada's Lionel Conacher Award.
In 2018, Shapovalov reached the semi-finals of the Madrid Open, becoming the youngest semi-finalist in the tournament's history and breaking into the top 30 as Canada's top singles player. The following year, he won his first ATP Tour singles title at the 2019 Stockholm Open and reached his first Masters 1000 final at the Paris Masters, ending the year ranked No. 15. Partnering with Rohan Bopanna in doubles, he also achieved notable success and became the top-ranked Canadian doubles player.
Shapovalov reached additional career milestones in 2020 by advancing to his first Grand Slam quarter-final at the US Open and the semi-finals of the Italian Open, which brought him to his career-high singles ranking of world No. 10. In 2021, he achieved his best Grand Slam performance by reaching the semi-finals at the Wimbledon Championships, while also making two additional tour final appearances.
