About Milos Raonic
Milos Raonic is a Canadian former professional tennis player who achieved a career-high singles ranking of world No. 3, making him the highest-ranked Canadian male player in Association of Tennis Professionals (ATP) history. Known for his powerful service game and an all-court style emphasizing short points, Raonic won eight ATP Tour titles during his career and reached a major singles final at the 2016 Wimbledon Championships.
Raonic was born on December 27, 1990, in Titograd, SFR Yugoslavia (now Podgorica, Montenegro), and is of Serb ethnic descent. In 1994, his family moved to Canada to seek professional opportunities amid the breakup of Yugoslavia, settling in Brampton, Ontario. Raised by parents who were both engineers, Raonic grew up alongside two older siblings. He is fluent in both English and Serbian.
He was first introduced to tennis around age six or seven at a week-long camp in Brampton before taking weekly group lessons. After moving to Thornhill, Ontario, he began intensive daily training with coach Casey Curtis at the Blackmore Tennis Club in Richmond Hill, working together twice a day for nine years. To accommodate his tennis schedule, Raonic reduced his school hours while maintaining high academic standards, graduating early from Thornhill Secondary School. At age 16 in 2007, he relocated to Montreal to join Tennis Canada's National Tennis Centre.
In 2008, despite receiving scholarship offers from several American universities, Raonic chose to turn professional while taking finance correspondence courses through Athabasca University. During his early professional years, he competed mainly on the ITF Futures and ATP Challenger circuits. He developed his game under Tennis Canada coaches, Frédéric Niemeyer, and Galo Blanco, eventually moving to Barcelona to train.
Raonic experienced his major career breakthrough in early 2011. As a qualifier at the Australian Open, he reached the fourth round and secured his first victory over a top-10 player. Three weeks later, he captured his first ATP Tour title at the Pacific Coast Championships, becoming the first player born in the 1990s to win an ATP singles title. Following these performances, his world ranking rose from No. 152 to No. 37 in one month, earning him the 2011 ATP Newcomer of the Year award.
Throughout his career, Raonic established several historic milestones. He became the first player born in the 1990s to reach the top 10 of the ATP rankings and to qualify for the ATP Finals. Raonic was also the first Canadian man in the Open Era to reach the quarterfinals of the French Open, the semifinals of the Australian Open, and the final at Wimbledon. All eight of his singles titles were won on hardcourts, and he compiled an overall winning percentage of 68%. Statistically one of the best servers in the Open Era, he won 91% of his service games.
Outside of regular tour play, Raonic worked as a broadcast analyst for Rogers Sportsnet in 2011 while recovering from an injury and defeated Pete Sampras in an exhibition match that same year. In 2012, he established a residence in Monte Carlo, Monaco. He also participated in the 2016 NBA All-Star Celebrity Game in Toronto. In April 2022, Raonic married Belgian model Camille Ringoir in Italy.
