Crystal Harris

Crystal Hefner, born Crystal Harris on April 29, 1986, is an American model. She gained widespread public recognition as the Playboy Playmate of the Month for December 2009 and as the third wife of Playboy publisher Hugh Hefner, to whom she was married from December 2012 until his death in September 2017.

Harris was born to Ray Harris, a singer and songwriter. She pursued her higher education at San Diego State University, where she majored in psychology.

Her career in media began in late 2008 when she was featured as the "Co-ed of the Week" on Playboy.com during the week of October 30. Beginning in late 2009, she appeared in one of the seasons of the E! reality television series The Girls Next Door, coinciding with her recognition as Playmate of the Month.

Harris subsequently pursued projects in music, fashion, and business. In April 2010, she signed a recording contract with Organica Music Group, a division of Universal Music Group managed by record producer Michael Blakey. In 2012, she co-designed a range of swimwear with Vanessa Bryce, the Australian designer and owner of Véve Glamour Swimwear. She expanded her fashion endeavors in 2014 by announcing a collection of intimates, athleisure, and loungewear co-designed with Rhonda Shear for sale on her website. By 2024, The New York Times reported that she buys and sells rental properties for a living.

Under the name Crystal Hefner, she published the memoir Only Say Good Things: Surviving Playboy and Finding Myself in January 2024. The book became an instant New York Times bestseller, though its placement was marked with a dagger symbol indicating potential bulk purchases. In the book and surrounding interviews, she detailed misogyny, objectification, and toxic conditions at the Playboy Mansion, describing herself as having felt imprisoned. These allegations differed from her earlier public statements in 2017 and 2020, in which she had praised Hugh Hefner as a kind soul and ally.

Harris began dating Hugh Hefner in January 2009 and became engaged to him on December 24, 2010. She broke off the engagement on June 14, 2011, five days before their scheduled wedding, shortly after appearing on the cover of Playboy's July issue as "Mrs. Crystal Hefner." The couple reconciled and married on December 31, 2012, remaining together until his death on September 27, 2017. She later announced her engagement to James Ward on April 25, 2025, and the couple eloped in Aitutaki in the Cook Islands on April 2, 2026.

Harris has also publicly discussed several health challenges. In 2016, she revealed diagnoses of Lyme disease, toxic mold, and breast implant illness, stating that removing her implants relieved symptoms of chronic fatigue and brain fog. In 2020, she disclosed that she had nearly died following a fat transfer procedure.
