Christophe Willem

Christophe Frédéric Durier, better known by his stage name Christophe Willem, is a French singer who gained national prominence as the winner of the fourth edition of Nouvelle Star, the French version of Pop Idol, in 2006.

Born on 3 August 1983, Willem spent most of his life in Deuil-la-Barre in Val-d'Oise, where his parents operated a driving school. During his childhood, he learned figure skating and played the piano, later singing with a gospel choir named Young Voices and composing songs by the age of fourteen. Prior to pursuing music full-time, he considered studying to become a lawyer and calculus professor, studied communication, and took on part-time jobs in babysitting and assisting at a theatre. In 2004, he appeared in the Richard Anconina film Alive, playing the role of Henri.

Encouraged by his family and friends, Willem auditioned for the 2006 edition of Nouvelle Star. Performing Des'ree's "Strong Enough," he impressed the judges with his vocal ability. During his time on the show, judge Marianne James gave him the nickname "La Tortue" (The Turtle). He went on to win the competition on 8 June 2006 after delivering a series of performances covering a variety of musical genres and artists.

Willem released his debut studio album, Inventaire, on 16 April 2007. The project launched with the single "Élu produit de l'année," followed by "Double Je," which reached number one in both France and Belgium, and "Jacques A Dit." Inventaire sold over one million copies, earning a double platinum certification in France as well as gold status in Belgium and Switzerland. To support the album, Willem embarked on a tour from November 2007 to July 2008 across France, Belgium, Switzerland, and French overseas territories, performing at Paris venues such as L'Olympia and Zenith.

In 2007, Willem was listed as the sixth highest-earning musician in France, accumulating 1.22 million euros through record sales, concerts, and contracts. That same year, he joined artists including Tears for Fears, Lara Fabian, and Murray Head on the Night of the Proms tour. His second album, Caféine, was published on 25 May 2009 and reached number one in France. It spawned the singles "Berlin," "Plus Que Tout," and "Heartbox."

Willem expanded into television in 2010 by joining the jury for the French version of X Factor. He released his third album, Prismophonic, in November 2011, featuring the singles "Cool" and "Si Mes Larmes Tombent." In 2018, he served as a domestic judge for Destination Eurovision, the national selection show for the Eurovision Song Contest, and joined the French commentary team for the event's broadcasts.

In addition to his solo work, Willem has been active in philanthropic endeavors. He has been a member of the French charity music ensemble Les Enfoirés since 2008.
