Early Life and Equestrian Beginnings

Sutherland grew up on a horse farm in Caledon, Ontario, where she developed an early passion for equestrian activities. She excelled in athletic pursuits during her youth, including competing for Canada's national Junior World Cup field hockey team. She later attended York University in Toronto, earning a Bachelor of Arts degree in communications and psychology. Despite initial hesitation from her family, she chose to pursue horse racing professionally, making her riding debut in 2000 at Woodbine Racetrack in Ontario.

Thoroughbred Racing Career

Sutherland made an immediate impact in horse racing, securing 124 victories during her second season in the saddle. Her breakout performances earned her Canada's Sovereign Award for Outstanding Apprentice Jockey in both 2001 and 2002. She later relocated to major racing circuits in the United States, including California, New York, and Florida. In March 2011, Sutherland made history as the first female jockey to win the prestigious Santa Anita Handicap, riding Game On Dude. She followed this victory in July 2012 by becoming the first female jockey to win the Hollywood Gold Cup. Over her multi-decade racing career, she has amassed more than 1,200 wins and tens of millions of dollars in career purse earnings.

Modeling and Media Career

Beyond the racetrack, Sutherland has established a successful career in fashion and television. Sutherland was married to businessman Dan Kruse from 2012 until their divorce in 2016. She was previously engaged to Hall of Fame jockey Mike E. Smith, with whom she competed in televised match races. Outside of racing and modeling, Sutherland is a licensed real estate agent and a certified yoga instructor.
