Brinke Stevens

Brinke Stevens, born Charlene Elizabeth Brinkman on September 20, 1954, in San Diego, California, is an American model, actress, screenwriter, and author. Renowned as one of the definitive cult horror scream queens of the 1980s, Stevens transitioned from an academic background in marine science into modeling and film, earning widespread recognition across independent cinema, comic book art, and genre fandoms.

Early Life and Academic Background

Stevens grew up in Southern California and initially set out to pursue a career in science. She earned a Bachelor of Science degree in Biology and Psychology from San Diego State University, followed by a Master of Science degree in Marine Biology at the Scripps Institution of Oceanography in La Jolla. Beyond her studies, she was an early enthusiast of pop culture conventions and won the inaugural costume masquerade ball at San Diego Comic-Con in 1974, an achievement that helped introduce her to photography and entertainment industry professionals.

Career and Modeling

Relocating to Los Angeles in 1980, Stevens began her entertainment career as a professional model and non-speaking film extra. Her breakout screen appearance came in the 1982 slasher film The Slumber Party Massacre. Throughout the 1980s and 1990s, she built a prolific acting resume in high-concept independent films, featuring in prominent genre titles such as Sorority Babes in the Slimeball Bowl-O-Rama, Nightmare Sisters, and Slave Girls from Beyond Infinity. Beyond feature roles, her distinct look inspired various comic art projects, including key illustrations by her former husband, artist Dave Stevens.

Directing, Writing, and Recent Work

In addition to acting in over 200 film projects, Stevens expanded her creative output into writing, producing, and directing. She co-wrote the 1991 horror-comedy Teenage Exorcist, authored the science-fiction novel Dangerous Toys, and served as an executive editor for Weird Tales magazine. In recent years, she moved behind the camera to direct feature films such as Personal Demons and Full Moon Features' Sorority Babes in the Slimeball Bowl-O-Rama 2, while remaining an active guest at international fan conventions.

Personal Life

Stevens was married to illustrator and comic artist Dave Stevens from 1980 until 1981, and retained her professional name after their divorce. Throughout her multi-decade career, she has remained a prominent figure in horror cinema fandom and continues to contribute to independent feature productions.
