Betty Who

Jessica Anne Newham, known professionally as Betty Who, is an Australian musician and singer born on 5 October 1991 in Sydney, Australia. She is best known for her pop, dance-pop, and synth-pop music, achieving recognition following her independently released debut single "Somebody Loves You" in 2012 and her debut extended play The Movement in 2013.

Raised in Sydney until her mid-teens, Newham began training as a cellist at age four. She relocated to the United States in 2007 to attend the Interlochen Center for the Arts in Michigan. Self-taught on piano and guitar, she wrote her first songs at age 14 and began performing as a singer-songwriter two years later, adopting her stage name from a song she composed at 16. After attending Ascham School and Frensham in Australia, she enrolled at Berklee College of Music in Boston, where she met producer Peter Thomas and began developing her musical sound.

Newham released "Somebody Loves You" in late 2012, co-written and produced by Thomas. The track gained wider online traction in September 2013 after being featured in a viral flash mob proposal video, debuting on the iTunes and Spotify charts and reaching number one on Billboard's Dance/Club Play Songs chart in March 2014. Following the success of The Movement, she signed with RCA Records in September 2013 and released her second EP, Slow Dancing, in April 2014. Her single "Heartbreak Dream" was subsequently used over the end credits of the 2015 film Pitch Perfect 2.

In October 2014, Who released her debut studio album, Take Me When You Go, which produced her second US Dance chart number one, "All of You". She released a cover of Donna Lewis's "I Love You Always Forever" in 2016, which reached number six on the ARIA Singles Chart in Australia and topped the US Billboard Dance Club Songs chart. Her second studio album, The Valley, was released in March 2017. Later that year, she parted ways with RCA Records to become an independent artist.

Who released "Ignore Me" in 2018 as her first independent single, followed by the EP Betty, Pt. 1 and a theme song remix for season two of Netflix's Queer Eye reboot. Her third studio album, Betty, arrived in 2019, supported by singles such as "Between You & Me" and "I Remember". In 2020, she launched a Patreon to fund new music and made her film acting debut portraying Kira Matthews in the comedy-drama Unpregnant.

In 2022, Who made her reality television debut hosting the Amazon Studios dating series The One That Got Away, released the single "Blow Out My Candle", and issued her fourth studio album, Big!. Expanding into musical theater, she made her Broadway debut playing Persephone in Hadestown from September 2023 to February 2024. In 2024, she guest-starred in the children's television program Yo Gabba Gabbaland, performing the song "I am the Wind".
